Fall is my favorite time of year. We have had a spectacular fall this year (MD/Chesapeake Bay area). Average daily temp for October was 70 degrees which is only slightly higher than normal (high 60s). Mornings and evenings have been cool and crisp, falling into the 50s once the sun goes down. While I love cooler fall days in the 50s, I know those days will be here soon so I am enjoying this pretty perfect weather since we had awful heat waves this summer. We havent had to use the heat or A/C since early Sept. Nighttime temps have made for perfect sleeping weather with the bedroom windows opened a little bit.
Today’s high is only supposed to be 60 and it is a beautiful sunny day. My neighbor and I are headed out in a couple hours to a “First Sunday” arts festival downtown and the weather couldn’t be more perfect for it.
The other odd thing is that the perennial plants are NOT browning out - which is what I usually let happen before I cut them down for the season. I have a long wall of daisies and they are green as can be! My zinnias are still blooming and I still have some vegetable plants producing! November 1st in Northern Ohio!
My daisies have new leaf growth at the base, and my blanket foweres are blooming better than they did all summer! Yes, weird. (My zinnias are done…)
But we have so many plants that need to be divided, which is an awful chore when it’s hot, so it’s nice to be able to do that without working up a sweat or worrying that they’ll burn up in their new location.
Same here regarding the perennials that need to be cut back. We really haven’t had a killing frost at our house, and until we do, no cutting back. I just hope that after that killing frost, there is one moderate temperature day to get the cutting chores done!
