Not having an apparent major on college apps affect admission

Here’s an example:
You volunteer at a hospital for 4 years, joined the Animal Awareness Club, attended a school in the engineering magnet, and then you apply for a business major for college.

I was fortunate enough to be able to take to a UC admission officer, and she said that not having a clear and committed path to a particular area affects your chance of getting admitted, and that it only helps you.

I was wondering if its the same with private schools, those competitive 20% admit rate +

For UCs, it depends on which division within the UC you are applying to, and which major for some divisions. Of course, essays which are consistent with your intended major or lack thereof may matter.
