Not listing other schools?

How bad would it be to not list any other schools that I am applying to?

Wouldnt really matter, but why wouldnt you? At least put some of them? Eh your choice

It shouldn’t actually affect your admissions decision, and Rice can’t force you to put them down.

My counselor told me to just leave it blank.

I have a theory that if they see lots of other top-notch universities they think you can get into, they’ll offer merit aid in hopes of drawing you from them.

I completely made this up but it makes sense.

I believe silentsailor’s theory is somewhat correct. Of course, you still need to be near the top of the applicant pool to get merit aid. However, Rice wants to know who they are competing with. I believe that if a top-notch candidate (one competitive for merit aid) for Rice also has applied to schools like HYPS, Duke, Northwestern, Dartmouth, etc., they will be more likely to award the candidate merit aid if he/she is competitive for merit aid. I highly doubt listing the schools will hurt you; in my opinion, it can only help (I would advise to list only 5-7 of them at most though).

But at the same time, I’d think that listing all these schools (particularly top notch schools) will make it seem as though Rice is just one of the many top schools that you’re applying to. You’re just trying to get into as many top schools as you can, and Rice is just one of them. In other words, listing a whole bunch of schools could make it seem like you have somewhat of a lower level of interest in Rice…? I don’t know.
But then again, if you’ve already scheduled campus tours and interviews, then it may not be an issue.

I do not think listing schools you apply to will hurt. My son applied two years ago and listed all twelve other schools that he applied to including Duke, Northwestern, WashU, UC Berkeley, etc. He ended up getting the 20K merit scholarship.

Agreed. ^^ My son applied 3 years ago and listed all the other schools he applied to, including Princeton, Cornell, CMU, Hopkins, etc, and he received 2 merit scholarships (equating to 3/4 tuition). Just list them. It won’t hurt you.

If anything if you have Rice and a bunch of other top-notch ones it is a compliment to Rice that they’re being considered with those schools. Better to be competing with Harvard, Northwestern, and Stanford than UMass Amherst, Northeastern Illinois, and Chico State.

Here’s the thing. I wrote about how I want a small university (I really do), but unfortunately a lot of the universities I am applying to are quite large (Cornell).

Should I still list?

I didn’t write the other schools I am applying to. It’s none of their business.

Guys it doesnt matter that much. Just choose one, list or not! I doubt they base your admission off of that list

Yeah…I’m not in this boat but I’d list if I were lol
