My daughter is very much struggling with college choice and has it currently narrowed down to UGA and Auburn for Speech Psthology. We understand many of the differences (school ranking, costs,Auburn has smaller town, Athens has music scene). She is kind of shy and does want to rush. She is currently not a partier (that could change in college LOL!). I do feel like she would attend church. She says Athens is a better school and there is more to do but she really likes the feel of Auburn (and it feels safer) but is worried she will be bored. I guess I am trying to see if there are any unique insights or thoughts about either of these schools, towns, or campuses. What do kids do on a typical weekend? Do most go home or stay? We are from the southeast so we are generally familier with both schools. Thank you!
I can speak to UGA: My friends who have gone seem to really enjoy it. On a typical weekend, it depends on the student: some go out and explore the music scene, some stay on campus and do activities there. Football games, sports, etc. The safety factor shouldn’t be too much of an issue: UGA is also really safe and has an amazing student health center. Off campus might be a bit iffy but caution is always recommended. Downtown is mostly safe as well. Good luck choosing!

She will do well at Auburn University. She is unlikely to experience boredom at AU. If AU feels right, then trust her instincts. Nevertheless, two great options !
Has she already been accepted to both colleges?
As you probably know, she will need a masters degree to become a licensed and certified speech language pathologist. The important thing for her undergrad years is that she is able to take the required courses for masters degree applicants. Assuming she can do this at either university…either is fine.
I did an AMA on speech language pathology. A couple of other speech language pathologists contributed as well as some parents with current students in the field. You might want to read that:
Yes. They both have the undegrad program. I am just trying to get more in depth info about the schools as far as fit for her. I passed along the speech pathology thread to her. Thanks.
My wife is a speech pathologist and absolutely loves her career.
I would say that the only things that matter in your decision if being an SLP is the goal are where you feel the most comfortable and where you want to work after. Do not worry even for one minute about things like school rankings. That will not matter.
The only reason knowing whether you’d want to live in Georgia or Alabama after graduation has to do with ease of licensing in the same state (bit even that can be overcome). If you don’t plan to live in either state after graduation, this is a non issue and simply pick the place you like the best.
Best of luck. The world needs more SLPs.
Based on what you described, I would say Auburn fits the bill. The majority of Dallas area kids I know attended church in Auburn and rushed.
Fewer seem to rush than at UGA. And church isn’t as big of a thing with the people I know that went to UGA (Athens).
UGA is akin to UT-Austin but more conservative. Auburn is likely more like A&M but much more Greek.
UGA is better academically but don’t know how much it matters for SP school.
It won’t matter- they both have the major.
Both schools’ two year masters programs have about 25 students per class and 100% certifying test passage rate.
