Not sure how to "unweight" D's grades

Hi everyone,

My school will not report unweighted grades so we are trying to figure it out. Some of the grades on D’s transcript are from 8th grade. I have heard that many schools won’t look at those grades. Those three grades bring down her average a good deal.

Also, when I have been trying to DIY unweight, I have excluded grades in “non-academic” subjects (choir, health, etc.) Is this what most do when they unweight?

Its not really that big a deal, since I easily see how she stacks up for acceptances on our school’s naviance page, but there are a few programs she would like to reach for (BS/MD) for which knowing the unweighted grades would be helpful. When I compare her stats to others’ results, I want to make sure I’m comparing apples to apples.

Thanks!

A=4, B=3, C=2. Average the result.

Generally for the Common Data Set numbers or comparison with other applicants out here, you don’t take out non-academic grades. Now a college might. But you shouldn’t for purposes of chancing our here, etc.

Here is a helpful calculator if she gets letter grades now:

There are schools that give 4.3 for an A+, too.

The thing you are trying to eliminate when “unweighting” is the assignment of more GPA points per credit for honors or AP classes.

@intparent Thanks! Thats exactly what I was looking for. What about the 8th grade grades? Keep them or chuck them for chancing purposes?

Chuck them.

Her school can’t tell you their formula?

@alooknac You would think they could, but they don’t.
