I’m a current freshman at Hunter but I’ve been taking college courses there since junior year of high school so i came in with around 18 credits. I plan to finish the hunter core requirements by spring semester. My dream school was Barnard but unfortunately, i got waitlisted and ended up not getting in. I’m on a full scholarship for Hunter for 4 years so I’m not sure if I just finish my bachelors at hunter and hopefully get into Barnard or Columbia maybe for my masters. Many people say it’s easier to get in for your masters.
Another possibility could be to finish off my spring semester at hunter and then try and try to transfer to Barnard next fall.
I’m not 100% sure as to what im going to major in but it’s along the lines of maybe Mathematics or mechanical engineering.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do?

You should do some research of your own first. Neither Barnard nor Hunter offer Mech E. Barnard will also still require all of your HS info for any possible transfer. I have to ask why you would give up a full tuition scholarship at this point? Can your family afford Barnard full pay?

Yeah, I’ve looked at the majors for Hunter and Barnard. I’m not too hooked on doing mechanical engineering. I might do Mathematics as a major and maybe computer science as a minor. Yeah, I’ve applied before so they have all of my HS info. I’m hoping I’d receive a scholarship of some sort if I do get accepted there. Another issues would be is if my credits transfer over to Barnard from Hunter.

How are your grades at Hunter?

Q. Does Barnard consider financial need in the evaluation of transfer applicants?

A. When considering transfer students who are US Citizens or Permanent Residents, Barnard has limited funding available and we consider financial need when reviewing admissions applications. Spring transfers are not eligible for Barnard College grant aid. Spring transfers are only eligible to apply for federal and state aid. Fall transfers are reviewed with an awareness that need may be a factor in a student’s ability to attend are are eligible for both Barnard College grant aid and for federal and state aid. Barnard is unable to assist international transfer students.

For all students, Barnard remains committed to meeting full demonstrated need in our financial aid packaging.

Q. I applied to Barnard as a first-year applicant and I am applying again as a transfer applicant. Do I need to submit an entirely new application?

A. If you decide to seek application again to the College, you will need to submit an entirely new application. However, we will have access to your prior application materials. Therefore, if you submitted official standardized test scores when you first applied, and you have not taken the exam since, we would still have this information on file. Letters of recommendation and supplemental materials would still be on file. We would not have your final high school transcript if you applied during your senior year, so this must be requested from your high school. Current and past college transcripts must be requested. And, remember, we also have your old essays, so this is a chance to inspire us with the new perspective you have gained as a wise transfer student.

The classes I took during my junior and senior year of high school at Hunter were all A’s except two B’s. I came in with a GPA of 3.5 and I’m taking 6 classes now and hope to earn A’s in all of them.

Barnard doesn’t offer master’s degrees. You could go to Columbia for a master’s.

Personally, I don’t think it’s worth it to give up a full scholarship at Hunter to pay your way at Barnard. If you got significant financial aid at Barnard that might mitigate it a bit, but still…it would have to be significant financial aid. They do promise to meet full financial need for all applicants, including transfers, but keep in mind:

When considering transfer students who are US Citizens or Permanent Residents, Barnard has limited funding available and we consider financial need when reviewing admissions applications.

Barnard admits 26.8% of its transfer applicants, which is actually slightly better than their freshman admission rate of 21%. More info on the average stats of transfers is available here.

You could always apply to transfer and see what happens.
