Not using cameras for over a year?

Why do some colleges not let film students use cameras for their entire freshman year? This is like music majors not being allowed to play instruments for a year! I understand that you have to learn theory and such, but as a hand-on type of learner, the fact that many of the colleges I’ve been accepted to have this policy really upsets me.

When you say “not use cameras” do you mean at all? I can’t imagine a school not permitting a student to even use a camera for personal reasons. That makes no sense.

If you mean in terms of during coursework, it may not be all that unusual at least for an Art School. My daughter is a graphic design major and during her first year she’s not using a computer for design at all…she’s chomping at the bit to get started but realizes she needs to get foundations studies out of the way first along with her computer pre-requisite.

I quoted you to my filmschool friend and he said “some? you mean all!” It’s normal practice.
