I wonder why VT couldn’t do something similar to what Michigan does with their Ross BBA students. It’s a 2 tier process. First you have to get accepted to UM (through what they call a “freshman admitting unit” which includes Colleges of Literature, Arts, and Sci, Engineering, etc.) and then they evaluate your separate Ross application.
Isn’t VT now treating Engineering the same as their other majors? In the past, I believe “non-restricted” majors did not allow a second choice on the application, so they were either were accepted or rejected based on that major. Now everyone is the same.
@dmvmomx2 probably because an accredited engineering program requires 4 full years of engineering courses so unless you were making it some 6 year program, youd still have to take all the engineering specific courses as some sort of nebulous random major and then run the risk of not getting into the college of engineering with a bunch of essentially worthless, difficult classes.
Normally, engineering courses, per se, are not taken in the first year.
@Muad_dib you still have to take the bs intro 1 and 2 courses which are required for any “actual” engineering courses after that. VT probably doesnt feel like having a massive intro course if they had to include everyone who just wanted to get into engineering.
My daughter has submitted her VT Coalition and SRAR(Early Decision). She went to review her status and status showed no application. I am wondering if we did something incorrectly?
Apparently the Status page won’t be working until next week @2019Engineering
Where is the VT “Status Page”? Thanks!
@VTforME My D got an e-mail from VT saying they’d received her application. The email had these instructions:
“2. Go to the Application Status Page from the link at https://admissions.vt.edu/apply/application-status-page.html (Your guest account to log into this page is your email address plus the password you created in item 1.c. above.)”
But when she went to that link there was no place to log in. So she emailed admissions and they said the status page wasn’t working yet.
Thanks! My son completed his app using Coalition. He has not received any communication (email or otherwise) from Coalition or VT. I am hoping VT is just struggling with the new admission setup and we will hear something soon.
LeastComplicated - When did you daughter apply and when did she receive the email?. Like VTforME, my daughter applied through the coalition app about one month ago, submitted the SRAR the next day, and still has not received any communication from VT. I am hoping VT Admissions would post something about this topic as it appears that this appears to be an issue.
I think she applied in mid Sept. She received the email this week. So it took about three weeks.
We are in the same boat. Son applied in September and we haven’t heard a thing. Also applied to VCU and the very next day he had a portal that was completely updated with transcript, SAT scores received, rec letter received. Very well organized at VCU admissions.
Does tech require the main coalition essay or just the four prompts ? Thank you
From VT website:
If Virginia Tech is the only school you’re applying to, there are several parts of the Coalition application you can skip:
The coursework
College Coursework
SAT/ACT/Subject/Additional Tests
Essays
Academic Interests.
Virginia Tech does not review Letters of Recommendation, so please do not include these.
@ShenVal18 The risk really isn’t the same if you look at previous years’ stats. A kid with good grades and a 1350 SAT would certainly be accepted to VT generally, but possibly rejected from engineering. If a kid knows he/she definitely wants engineering, then no problem he/she just applies engineering everywhere and sees what happens. If that kid knows he/she wants to go to Virginia Tech, the new process has just made it much riskier to apply engineering or architecture since it is now all or nothing (which is a deviation from how they’ve always done it). I just think it’s a bummer because it will affect the kids who are loyal to Virginia Tech.
How difficult to declare sports analytics/journalism as incoming NOVA freshman?
This sortable database can break down admissions by college/major/program for the past several years. While it’s not yet updated for 2018, it’s pretty insightful.
Has anyone been able to access the application status page yet? Or is it still not working?
No access for us yet. We did log on and saw that VT transmitted the SRAR to the application with a date of just a few days ago (the app was submitted almost a month ago). So things must be happening. But no portal access yet.
