Notebooks and note taking in college?

So, i’m abut to start my first semester of college in a couple of weeks, and I had a question. Do college profs. sometimes ask for papers (assignments) at the end of class? See, I like to write my notes on a certain type of notebook, but they don’t have many pages that can tear out. Think of it as if I was planning to write all my notes in a composition notebook. If I try to tear out a page of a composition notebook and try to turn it in, it looks sloppy. Do they sometimes ask for an assignment on paper at the end of class, or do they not even bother with stuff like that. Is it safe to always take notes on composition books, or is it critical I have a spiral notebook where I can rip out the pages? Thanks.

This should be one of your last worries in College.
Some Prof do not care if you use paper towels, I-pad or notebook or Laptop or notes taking. Even more-so, they care less if you take notes or not, or dozed off the entire class. However, when an assignment is given, they expect to have it turned in by the DATE LINE. Assignments will either be due at the begging of the class or end of class, but the schedule will be on the Syllabus and should be given out on first day of class to see what is due and when it is due.
Besides note taking becomes a personal decision in college, as some student s prefer to just sit, watch and listen (visual learners), while some prefer to have some artifact (take notes) for review afterwards.
What will make the difference here is that, depending on what school you attend (competitive or less competitive), most students will study the assigned chapters before class, so when they come to class, they just listen for the Prof perspective, and maybe take down notes if they feel something stood out that they did not get while studying.
In all, you are entering an atmosphere where no one is going to police you on what you do anymore, what matter now is for you take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for your life, education, and future.
Bets of luck to you.

I never had this happen, but I guess it’s possible. Why not just take a few sheets of loose-leaf paper in a folder?

Don’t worry about this.

Generally, it won’t really but this will be class specific. If you find that it’s happening regularly, you can always bring some binder paper with you to class. If you don’t have paper, just ask someone sitting next to you. The handful of times I’ve needed to turn something in, there are always people asking for paper from their neighbors. Some students take notes on a laptop and don’t even bring paper to class. There will always be someone who will give you a sheet, especially if it’s something that’s unexpected. If it’s happening every class, then it might be better to just bring your own.

The only time I experienced needing to rip out pages to hand in to the professor was for “quizzes” on the reading which were only really used as a form of taking attendance. As others said, just bring some loose leaf paper or ask a classmate to borrow some if this happens.

I’ve only rarely had to rip out pages of my notebook, and those were during rare pop quizzes. Mostly I just took notes in a regular spiral during lectures.
