Notes from underground- still without power

Yay, anothermom2! Glad to see the size of this group dwindling…

My condolences to all still without.

We really do take it for granted, don’t we.

I feel for you, guys.

But I was not VERY HAPPY, when I had to pay $600/mo electricity for my 2000 sqft home few summers ago when CA was buying electricity from out of state. We did not even have A/C!

My parents were out until yesterday…a neighbor stretched an extension cord from his lamp post to them and another neighbor to power their fridges. Only problem was that he would leave occasionally…his mother has altzheimers and she kept seeing the lamp post light on and turning it off. I had to go keep introducing myself to get her to turn it back on. He finally removed the bulb - problem solved.

We were without power until Tuesday night, but we had no water.

My mother in CT got her power back last night.

Lots of homes and businesses in central and eastern CT still without power … including yours truly’s. Tuesday night I’m told. Phone, internet and cable are in-and-out … currently out. Wednesday night I’m told. “To report continued power outage, please call or email CL&P.” Just gotta laugh sometimes.

Finally got power back at about 3am this morning. Laundry, grocery shopping and cleaning will take up much of the day. I got home from dinner/movie last night about 12:45am and the neighborhood was crawling with utility crews. Wonderful sight.

Glad the lights are going on for more people. I don’t think we have heard from dadx yet…

I really appreciated everyones participation and thoughts and stories over these last few days. Thanks.

Finally got our power on about 10 minutes ago. Thank goodness. Must be because I finally broke down and got that generator at Costco today.

Was I the last one to get power back? It came back around 2 AM Sunday morning. We were out 166 hours. Telephone came back around 5 PM Saturday. Internet starved daughter went into the library and locked the door behind her. For the next few hours she ignored repeated calls from her mother that “there are other people in the house you know.” The generator was an effective stop gap … but it’s nice that it’s quiet in the neighborhood this morning.

This was my summer experience when the government where I currently live blew up our brand new power station inadvertently. Makes you appreciate electricity! Glad it is going back on for everyone!

I truly do sympathize with all of you who lost power, but 166 hours is a drop in the bucket compared to the three weeks we were without power after Hurricane Wilma. Like many of you, we lived on a street where about 50 of us didn’t get our electricity back when everyone else did. Since the power company restores power to those areas that affect the most customers first and then work their way down to the outliers, we were the last to get reconnected. It was especially frustrating because all it would have taken to get us back online was one truck and less than 30 minutes, but we were put at the back of the line because it only affected about 3 blocks of our street.

The street behind us had power back after about 1 week and one of our neighbors graciously allowed us to run a very long extension cord through our back yard, across the street, through her front yard and into her home. We got the refrigerator going and a couple of lights (and the modem and PC!) so that was something, at least. But it was in the 90’s during the day and the 80’s at night with high humidity around the clock. We had no hot water for showers. We had to troop over to my aunt’s house to bathe. We cooked on the gas grill and boiled water for coffee singles over a Sterno can. It was the most miserable 3 weeks of my life :(. I’ll never again take electricity for granted.

I’m glad that you guys are getting power back now and I totally understand how great it feels when those lights unexpectedly flicker back on and the TV starts blaring. Sweet relief!

Not the last if you count relations of posters. My brother in CT still has no power. One of his neighbors also has no power but when he calls the electric company they argue with him and tell him that he does have power. I can’t imagine anything more frustrating. Apparently this guy is so irate he has called all the way up to the Attorney General and wants to sue the power company.

At church today I heard that as of this morning there are 40 families in town still without power. Last Sunday night there were 9900, so this is major progress.

One friend told us that he had been raking his yard and picking up debris when the power company came by and pointed out that now that his house has power, that broken line that is dangling in a tree in his front yard is LIVE. 2400 Volts.

^ The lineman who came through our neighborhood last Friday found two high tension wires laying on the ground, and took action … he climbed the poles and cut the wires off. Problem solved!

[Follow-on] Soon after that a neighbor called the electric company to ask when power might be restored to the neighborhood. He was told “We have a crew working in your neighborhood right now.” Yeah, working … but not making progress.

Glad more people are back on line. I would not have lasted 3 weeks like the hurricane wilma survivors did. My mother was in florida for many storms, and for her Andrew was the worst. She did not live to see Wilma. Her complex was badly hit, but she had passed away several months before. In whenever ther is a storm, I always think of how hard it is for floridians. I just never thought the north would get slammed so badly.

Holy cow, the power is out again in parts of central NJ! JCPL said it should be back on in a few hours. Good thing I haven’t had time to re-stock my fridge and freezer :)

Being without power is one of the worst.

Another worst is being stuck on Route 17N for two hours and 20 minutes waiting for Triple A. That was my evening.
