How horrible.

how very sad. Prayers for all involved.

Yes, very sad. He is from Long Grove, a suburb less than 15 minutes from where we live… the wind has had a quite a toll on our area the last two days. Another woman not too far from us was impaled in her abdomen by a large tree branch that fell through her moving car.

I have been very, very careful while outside the last couple of days. There’s no telling what kind of flying debris can surprise you out of nowhere. We lost only one roof tile, but will have to have the entire roof inspected to see if there is other damage. I can’t imagine what would have happened to me had I been out on our patio when the tile came flying down.

Wow… just found out that he attended a parochial high school about two miles down the road from me. I’m sure some of my daughter’s friends who did not choose public high school, and instead went to this parochial school, knew him.

Heard about this on the news this morning. How awful. So sad.

He should never have been up on that tower in those wind conditions.

My sophomore son at ND says the tornado horns had been going off, and students needed to immediately go into a basement then.
Everyone on campus and in the whole area is shocked and devastated by this student’s death. The basilica will be packed even more than usual at tonight’s Mass to be presided over by the president, Fr. Jenkins. I am heart sick for the family. It is so unimaginable a loss.

written by a senior ND football player…

In the midst of a season where you are disappointed with the outcomes … you can lose sight of what’s most important. Sad day at practice,‘’ senior linebacker Brian Smith posted on his Twitter page on Wednesday.
I will never forget today.‘’

I am stunned at this senseless loss of life. Like galwaymom, I have a sophomore son at ND. The community of Notre Dame is devastated… I cannot imagine the heartache of Declan’s parents.

a little late, but ND is streaming memorial mass for Declan on the web… started 10 pm Eastern…

[Mass of Remembrance for Declan Sullivan will be streamed live on Web // News // Notre Dame News // University of Notre Dame](Mass of Remembrance for Declan Sullivan will be streamed live on Web | News | Notre Dame News | University of Notre Dame)

There needs to be an investigation of why ND considered it appropriate to have a student up there filming under such hazardous weather conditions – and why, for that matter, the team was practicing outside at all under those conditions.

There is a column in the Washington Post about this:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/28/AR2010102807025.html?hpid=sec-sports

The columnist speculates that the reason Declan did not refuse to go up there was his commitment to ND sports. But another possibility might be that this was a job that he needed to help pay for college, and he was afraid of being fired.

I read his last tweets in the paper today. Horrifying. the poor young man was terrified up there.

I agree. Presumably there were adults present and these questions need to be asked of them, of the Athletic Dept. and of the school administration.

"Ninety minutes before he plunged to his death, Sullivan tweeted, “Gusts of wind up to 60 mph, well today will be fun at work. . . . I guess I’ve lived long enough.”

"Less than 30 minutes before the lift crashed through a fence in back of the team’s practice field, he tweeted, “holy [expletive] holy [expletive] this is terrifying.”

My S graduated last year from ND.
Like others I am heartsick, and sad about this, but mostly ANGRY.

Notre Dame officials need to be held accountable for this young man’s death. Coaches and Athletic Directors have often practiced teams in adverse weather conditions because they are so focused on winning. I hope there is a full investigation and the people responsible for Declan’s death are prosecuted. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.
