D (HS Class of 2015) has two older brothers - one in college (on merit scholarship, but not full ride) and the other in grad school (fully funded PhD program). I am trying to figure out how to answer the NPC question on how many kids will be in college - is it 2? TIA.

Does the student in the fully-funded PhD program receive more than half of his support from his parents?

He gets either 30-35k from Berkeley where he is at. We do provide him “extra” money but it’s not set amount. So, the rule seems to indicate if we support him more than 15000/year (providing he gets 30k/year which I need to check), I can include him in the NPC calculation. Am I getting it right?

No, you would have to provide more support than Berkeley. Greater than 50% of his total support, not half of what Berkeley is giving him.

Oh, I get it. I mis-read @4kidsdad’s quote wrong. So, to include him, I need to support him more than what he gets from Cal.

Yes, you would have to provide over $30k per year for him, which is unlikely.

He would like that but, yeah, unlikely.

Thank you all.
