NPC Question: How much was paid in private elementary and secondary school expenses?

Is this tuition only? OR does this include extracurricular activities offered by the school but paid separately (i.e. before and after school program activities)?

How about language/culture Sunday schools (Chinese, Hindi)?

Thanks.

Did your kid board at the school?

If so…tuition, fees, room and board.

What extracurriculars

I doubt The Sunday stuff

@thumper1 Its a day school. so no room and board.
@mom2collegekids they have before/after school chess, homework club, etc. When we pay for tuition, they include it in the total fees. Hence, I don’t know if I need to subtract it so only tuition remains.
thanks.

Run the NPC both ways. Some schools won’t consider the extra expenses at all, or won’t give you full credit for it.

I would say…your costs to the school if all inclusive should be included on your financial aid from.

Some schools require participation in these activities as a part of the schooling.

Really…many colleges don’t consider the expenses for private elementary or high school at all in their calculations as that is considered a choice.

Since the OP was talking about an NPC, I assumed the school does consider it - or why ask the question? That’s why I said to run it both ways, with the all inclusive being the best case scenario and the bare bones (tuition only) being the worst.

It’s really only an estimate.

or why ask the question<<<<<<<<

The schools might consider that disposable income too. Paying for private school is a choice.

Right, but they don’t ask if you spent the money on a vacation or a lotto tickets or gourmet food. It seems they know the total income and value that some is spent on other tuitions.

I think they are just asking which one is your favourite child LOL.
Do they ask how much your mortgage is? Your property tax? Your health insurance?

@twoinanddone

There are lots of questions asked as supplemental profile questions that are not used to compute need based aid.

IIRC, there is even a field for qualified pretax retirement account balances.

There are plenty of questions asked that do not in the end factor into the need based financial aid equation.

As you noted, the poster should run the NPC both with and without that private school cost. If there is no difference…they will understand

I took it to be a specific NPC for a specific school, thus if asked, the school was interested. If this is for the general profile app, then I’d over-include and let the school consider what it wants. The OP said it was for the NPC, not the profile app.

My kids know who the favorite child is. Both think it is the other one, so I much be doing something right.

But even the regular profile asks some questions which are not used in the calculations. And that IS for specific colleges.

They could call the college directly and ask what the college would like included for those private school costs. I’m sure the school will be able to help them.

Thank you everybody!

So I run the NPC three ways. This is for Haverford BTW.

  1. Tuition only
  2. Tuition + fees($3.5k a year)
  3. half tuition (thinking of transferring to public this year)

The estimated net price for 1) and 3) are the same.
2) is $4,000 more than 1) and 2)

@thumper1 - you’re right. Calling the college directly should solve my confusion. Or if my child decide to take Haverford off the list
