Like @katewithak said, the number of semifinalists is ~1400 according to last year’s stats (https://www.afswiki.org/index.php/Gearing_up_for_the_NSLI-Y_Interview_Season)

From the same wiki, here’s some info regarding the interviews for anyone interested:

Interview Timeline: After semi-finalists are selected by American Councils for International Education, AFS-USA conducts the NSLI-Y semi-finalist interviews. The interview season will last from mid-December, 2014 through the end of January, 2015. Some AFS Area Teams prefer to hold their NSLI-Y interview event in mid-December, prior to the Christmas and New Year holidays, but most teams have their interview event in early to mid January. We would like to have all interviews completed by January 26 this year to allow the SIC’s time to process and submit interview forms. If a semi-finalist cannot participate in an interview event due to geographic reasons or otherwise, an AFS NSLI-Y Seasonal Interview Coordinator will help you plan an in-person or phone interview for that student. Please know that each area team is free to decide the best weekend for your interviews or event according to your staff and volunteer’s availability. Below we provide some suggested dates that would not conflict with the holidays or scheduled ACT/SAT test dates.

Ideal Dates to hold NSLI-Y Interview Events in 2015-16:
December 14th, 20th and 21st: For Area Teams planning to hold semi-finalist interviews in December (Dec. 13th is an ACT test date)
January 10-11, 17-18: Ideal weekends to complete NSLI-Y interviews in January! (Jan. 24th is an SAT test date).

Max is pretty great

Hi everyone! I really want to post this message for the people who did not receive a notification yet. Yesterday was just the FIRST day of notifications! Today is just the second day I f notifications. Just because you did not get a notification the first day, that does NOT mean you have any less of a chance to be a finalist. NSLIY works in mysterious ways so we never know how they organize the notifications. If you haven’t gotten a notification yet, please do not worry! Do not be negative because that will just bring bad energy. Have faith in yourself! Yes this program is competitive but in order for people to be confident in you, you need to be confident in yourself! If you need someone to talk or if you need some motivation/a pep talk, I’m here for you! Just PM.

Good luck waiting! Have faith! Everything happens for a reason!

Was rejected. Yup. Ok. Well. Pretty bummed out right now.

@dory0814 look on the positive side, you’re in an amazing position for applying next year!

Rejected also :(

same with the rejection, has anyone gotten accepted today?

Rejected…

Wow did they send out most of the rejections today or something? I got rejected too but I wasn’t taken by surprise…
Oh wells, gotta pick myself up and start applying to other scholarship abroad opportunities! (I suggest you guys do the same too, this isn’t the end of the world:] )

Also guys listen up! Remember, they didn’t reject you, they don’t know you. They rejected an application, not you!

@Obraynerd I don’t qualify for other scholarships. This was my only option…

@katewithak
This was my last year to apply.

^ Why not? Are you looking for other summer/year programs?

Daughter, 11th grade, rejected.

@Obraynerd I am a day too old for CBYX, too old for most other programs.

wait @girlintheworld are you on the fb group…

Im gunna apply to YES but i doubt my mom would actually let me go, My GPA isnt good enough for CBYX (which is sucky since I have been studying German for three years)
But look into other programs fellow “Rejects” i don’t know of many but i’m sure we can find something else for everyone to apply to, yeah?

Yeah, you guys aren’t the only ones to be rejected…but I’m trying to apply to YES but because I’m being really negative right now I doubt I will get that one…but don’t get to upset, it’s only one opportunity out of many that will no doubt come in the future.

^ Did you check YES? Oh noes I’m so sorry. I would check out gap year programs or non scholarship programs
