NSLI-Y 2015-2016

If you got rejected today, don’t worry. This is not the end. There are many other opportunities. NSLI-Y is a very competitive program and just because things didn’t go as planned please do not give up. Look at different study abroad opportunities! And if you are a senior and you can’t apply to NSLI-Y again, there is a program just like NSLI-Y it is called CLS, it is a NSLI-Y but for college students basically! http://www.clscholarship.org/</a> Please join the facebook groups for positive feedback on rejection. Like someone said earlier, they rejected your application, not you. Maybe this summer you are not going abroad with NSLI-Y but there are many things you can do during the summer! Please do not give up. Make this summer count. Look at different opportunities and stay positive. Good luck everyone!

Do your grades have to be really good for CBYX? I’m worried now. I’m a 10th grader who has only taken 3 A.P. classes, 6 Honors, 6 Language credits (all honors) and 4 other regular classes. I have a 4.0 unweighted and a 4.7 weighted. I think I’m pretty well rounded with extra curricular. Do I stand a chance?

Your totally fine my friend, I’m just a bad student in general so my GPA is sucky. You need to be above a 3.0 unweighted for cbyx,

@Schnuff3‌ I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Especially since your unweighted gpa is 1 whole point above the standard! Good luck!

@Winchesterpower‌ Can you bring it up before apps are due? CIEE (my nearest provider) has it due on Friday.
@lovinglife01 Thanks!

@girlintheworld‌ there’s always the similar college version of NSLI-Y, CLS (<a href=“Languages List - Critical Language Scholarship Program”>http://clscholarship.org/languages/</a>)

@exoplanet99‌ Thanks! But that is a summer program and I really wanted to take a gap year before I went to college.

I definitely plan on applying for CLS when I am in college though!

@Schnuff3‌ No, GPA’s only update after the semester, and YFU’s deadline was actually yesterday.

BTW, if any of your regional rotary’s are still open for applications, that’s at least a very cheep study abroad option.

@Winchesterpower‌ - Thanks! I’m going to a local study abroad fair and will definitely be on the look out!
@Skieurope Hey, how is my Russia buddy doing?

Guys I’m really sorry and I’m honestly going to say that you were all dedicated to your language and you all were very competitive applicants. I know I can’t do much to make you happy because you deserve to be a little upset. I’m probably annoying you too but I can’t help but feel bad for you all. Some of your essays I had read and your passion was definitely there. Apply for other programs and even if Nsli-y isn’t what you will be doing this summer, you will still do things that the people abroad won’t be able to do. You are still going to amazing, influential things in your life. Make the most out of all this! Think of it as a practice run and next year you will bring out your secret weapon  I know you have heard this before but please don’t give up on your dream of studying abroad or majoring in the job with your language. Nsli-y’s decision does not reflect your self worth. Don’t lose confidence okay? ^^

Ah, do you guys know of any forums for YES?

@Winchesterpower‌ I don’t think there’s an active one n here but we have a 2015-2016 fb group and chat!

Hey, I suppose I should explain my grade and other stats. I’m a senior in Colorado. My top 3 choices were Chinese, Arabic, and Korean, in that order. I’m very excited, albeit very worried for the release of the final decision! Also, to those who got rejected, I know it’s a pretty awful feeling, and I do sympathize. But, best of luck for future applications or travels, it’ll work out in the end!

@reecie569‌ hi! Congrats! Are you applying for summer or year programs? And do you have any experience in the languages you applied for?

I am applying summer for all. I have had no experience with the languages, but would love some!

Nsli-y posted this on Facebook~

Congrats everyone and email if you haven’t heard anything!!! ^^

O_O That was quick! Doesn’t it usually go through December?!?!

Did they just do acceptances on one day, and then rejections the next?

I am soooo confused.

@fromUSA2Russia‌ That’s what it looks like… I’m not sure why the timeline has been pushed up so far this year though

I’m really shocked at who got accepted/rejected. There were some people who though FOR SURE would get in who didn’t.

@schnuff3 Doing fine thanks. How are you?
