NSLI-Y 2015-2016

@‌katewithak I’m totally with you there.

@fromUSA2Russia‌ I believe so, everyone commenting on Dec. 2nd was rejected and everyone commenting on Dec. 1st was accepted. We just have to look good at the interview, which I’m worried about. People tell me I come off as outgoing and confident upon first meeting though, so I hope I’ll be fine! :)

@skieurope‌ I’m great! I haven’t seen many posts from you lately, so I was just worried about you. :)>-

Also, CIEE CBYX extended it’s application deadline to December the 19th for any of you North Carolinians.

Some people did get accepted yesterday but it was a small amount.

As some of y’all already know, I was rejected. Got the email yesterday. Hopefully I’ll have better luck with YES and CBYX, and, honestly, I would rather be rejected at this stage than make it to semis and then get rejected in April. Good luck to y’all going forward! :slight_smile: Y’all are amazing and completely 100% deserve this scholarship <3

Just casually waiting for CBYX notifications over here. But I think talking and being in person is a strong suit for me- I can talk persuasively for dayzzzzzz so I’m really excited for the interview. And for CBYX notifications. And Yes even though that sin’t due for like a month.

@katewithak
haha see I am so nervous with the interview because I talk quite a lot XD I don’t want them to get bored… I’m also really worried about it because the semi notification was a confidence boost and if I get rejected this time… I’m going ton be quite upset :confused: What did you apply for again? Was it Arabic Summer?

I’m also really excited for the interview because I feel like I’ll be able to elaborate on what I put in my application. :wink:

@evan241‌ Evan, I am totally shocked that you got rejected. Your essays were one of the best that I’ve seen. I wish you lots of good luck on your other applications! Fingers crossed that you go to Turkey for a year! And if it doesn’t happen this year, you can still apply again. Stay positive and thanks for your support! :slight_smile:

I applied for Arabic year :slight_smile: I’m too young for summer programs but old enough for year :)

Has anyone started to look through the medical evaluation form? I’m asking because On my application I put China Summer as my first and only preference. But over time I realized that I would also enjoy going to other summer programs for my 2nd and 3rd choice. On the fourth page of the overall application form and the first page of part A, at the top it says to list your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd language preferences. Can I add in a 2nd and 3rd preference even if I did not do so on my app? I will keep Chinese Summer as my number one preference. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

I don’t really know what that means, but I did see it! I would probably recommend either calling or emailing the NSLI-Y office, but only if you were really serious about it. Sorry for the lack of information…

Definitely ask them. You can never be too careful :slight_smile: ok well you can but not in this context :P

The conversation is soooo dead now >~<

:P I know! We went from like a sugar high (lots of posts!!!) to a sugar low… Which is right now, not much to say… I think that I like being in the middle best!

Who here is learning two languages (other than English) right now? I am learning Spanish in school and Russian on my own. Just wondering! I also want to start learning a third language on my own, but I have WAY to many to choose from… :confused:

@fromUSA2Russia‌ I am currently learning French and Russian, and contemplating German!

Today I went to my school district’s study abroad fair and by chance, I met representatives of my state’s NSLI-Y sponser: AFS. They were so unbelievably kind and gracious to myself and everyone else visiting their table. When I told them I was a NSLI-Y semi finalist, they freaked! (I’m talking straight-up hugs.) I was even invited to a study abroad meeting to hang out with some exchange students in my area this Sunday and meet a few interviewers. I’m so super excited, and hope to make a good first impression before interviews. :-bd

@fromUSA2Russia‌ What is your favorite Russian word? What Russian word do you think is the funniest sounding? The hardest to say?

I have a big book that’s really helpful called “My First 1,000 words in Russian” and it’s super helpful! My library has alot of books on foreign language. :-B

@Schnuff3 My library only has like the more “popular” languages like Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Italian. I have never been lucky enough to find any Korean textbooks. I had to order mine online.
@fromUSA2Russia
I am learning Spanish at school because I can understand it fluently but not speak it fluently.
I am also learning Korean on my own ^^ you already know all this XD

Hi! I feel like this thread has died down but have over 400 posts and almost 30 pages at this point and we are just about halfway through the application process! During interview time I bet we will have 10 new pages

Found out I’m a semi-finalist and can’t believe it! First choice Turkey summer. I’ve looked at all the stats/numbers published by NSLI-Y but couldn’t find any definitive acceptance rate for semi-finalists. Anyone know what percent of semi-finalists actually make it?

@Schnuff3‌

O_O WOW!!! I am so happy for you, IT IS SUCH A GREAT OPPORTUNITY!

I don’t really have a favorite word in Russian, but I do use this phrase a lot with my friend (who is learning Russian a little bit, but also learning Spanish and German) “Вы практикуете по-русски?” (Which is: Have you been practicing Russian?) I think that the funniest sounding is the verb for “I love” - “я люблю”. I know that this might sound weird, but I am still practicing the formal way of saying “hello” -“здравствуйте”. :open_mouth: I should look for that book! I have just been learning from online, different websites or native speakers on YouTube (not the best way to learn Russian, but it works for now…). I am asking for lots of Russian vocabulary or grammar books for Christmas… :slight_smile:

@curlykat‌

Merhaba! :slight_smile: I don’t really know exact numbers, but I think I have seen that a little less than half of the semi-finalists end up getting accepted into the program… No one knows for sure, NSLI-Y works in different and unknown ways.

@lovinglife01‌

I know, right! Though I don’t think that the page counts will even come close to the time around finalist notifications (Probably like 20 pages of nervousness and excitement!).

@EmmaPotts‌

:P Yup!
