NSLI-Y 2015-2016

I made an earlier post about which countries I chose, but I guess it didn’t go through? So if it does later then excuse that.

(((APPLY TO YES EVERYONE)))
(i got to the interview stage for yes/cbyx/nsli and was accepted to yes and cbyx, and i’m currently on YES. they’re all amazing opportunities!)

@lunascreatures - What country are you in with YES??? I’m applying to YES too, actually working on my essays right now!! :)

@evan241 Macedonia!

@lunascreatures - That is super exciting!! My top choices are Turkey, Malaysia, Indonesia, and South Africa, but I would be super happy to go to any country. Macedonia sounds amazing!

Guys…tomorrow will be only two weeks away from December 1st! Time is flying by.

@evan241 yeah my top choices were malaysia and indonesia :slight_smile: (macedonia was added after the application was submitted; we could only rank it after IPSE)

good luck to everyone! i hope you get an interview - even though i didn’t get into nsli, i’m really glad i had the opportunity to have an interview. definitely prepped me for my other exchange interviews and helped me calm down and understand that interviews really don’t have to be scary.

oh yo also - everyone should join facebook groups relevant to whatever program you’re applying to. for nsli, join NSLI-Y applicants 2012-2013 (it’s not actually for that year, it’s a general group - they just can’t change the name because there are so many members) and for YES, join KL-YES Abroad 2015-2016.

Ah, Hey guys! My name is Emmie, it’s a pleasure to meet you all. It’s so nice to find a current NSLIY forum. I’m a sophomore and little froshes like y’all make me feel like such an under achiever! :-<

For my essay I wrote about going to a church camp as an atheist and learning new life lessons. Was anyone else a special submission case like me?

Goodluck to all. I hope to see you in N.Y.

Warmth from North Carolina!!!

(P.S.) anyone have an Instagram? Love making friends. My user is: sirine_originale

Hey Evan, are you a sophomore?

Hi everyone! You can call me Ang :slight_smile:
I applied for the China summer program and only that program… Everyone has 2nd and 3rd choices but I saw that wasn’t required so I just put China summer… I hope that doesn’t hurt me in any way! I’m a sophomore. What grade are you all in (if you haven’t said so already?) I wish you all good luck!
If you already applied and you did/did not get in, what program did you go on/apply for and what program are you applying for now? Why did you think you did or did not get accepted?

What do you think is the ideal NSLI-Y candidate?

@lovinglife01

HI Ang my name is Emma and I am a freshman. I’m in the same boat as you, I applied for Korea summer and I really wanted that one so I didn’t put any second or third preferences. I’m worried because it might hurt us cause the program may think we aren’t open to other cultures or it will greatly benefit us because the program may see how dedicated we are to that one culture. I just know I’d do my best with Korean compared to another language. :smiley:

Hi Emmie and Ang! Nice to meet you!

@lovinglife01‌

I also just put down one choice, Russia summer. :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: Sorry, I can’t answer the rest of your questions, this is my first time applying… (I am a freshmen)

I also don’t really know who the ideal candidate is, probably just a mature person with a passion for languages and countries. :slight_smile:

@Schnuff3‌

Is it warm in NC? IT IS SOOO COLD UP HERE!!! Yesterday night the temperature + wind chill was -3. (Without the low was 13…) At least it isn’t as bad as some northern states are getting! :stuck_out_tongue: But I don’t really mind cold, I just wish that it would snow at least 3-4 inches…

I guess my first post hasn’t showed up. If it does, sorry for the repost. My first choice program is Russian Year, my second choice is India Year and my third is Any Year. I am quite nervous and excited. I can’t wait until December =)

Hey guys! I have applied for

 1. Russia Year
 2. India Year
 3. Any Year

I am pretty excited. I know a lot of Russian, as well as French (which wouldn’t really help me with these countries) I wish you all good luck. Do any of you know when we will hear anything?

@fromUSA2Russia‌

Omg! Yes… It is very cold but a bit warmer in N.C… It’s almost like we are getting prepped for Moscow or Kiev! Now we just need it to snow… Did y’all have issues sending in your app? The government made this special exception and investigated it, and I’m afraid it will hurt my chances! XD

@dIAMondDRAGON‌

Yay! Another Francophile. I’m almost fluent in French and have taken Spanish 1 and 2. I know no Russian, but plan to take it in the spring. I think we will know in December. Nice to see a fellow sophomore.

@EmmaPotts‌

You do sports, right? I’m a figure skater… I’m N.C.'s 2nd state finalist in freestyle 3. What do you play?

@Schnuff3 - I’m a junior! I’m one of the oldest ones on this thread :open_mouth:

Guys I have this magic theory that semi-finalist notifications are going to start in late November instead of early December. And I should be doing homework instead of thinking about said theory. If they don’t start late November…My bet is that they start December first like last year.

@Schnuff3‌

It has already snowed twice here! :slight_smile:

No, I didn’t have any issues… I have heard of people whose electricity went out like a day before the deadline… :confused:

@evan241‌

I hope that they start early, I am constantly thinking of NSLI-Y!

I HOPE THAT WE ALL BECOME SEMI-FINALISTS!!! :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: AND THEN ALL BECOME FINALISTS!!! :P

@evan241‌ I That would be amazing. Homework is the last of my priorities right now. I will be hearing back from a lot of important places in the next month. It is so nerve wracking. I rather forget and watch Netflix all night. It is also senioritis kicking in.

@fromUSA2Russia‌ IF WE ALL BECAME FINALIST I WILL LEGIT CRY SO MUCH FROM HAPPINESS.

I ate a fortune cookie the other day and the fortune said “Your goal will be reached very soon” I hope that is a good sign!

@girlintheworld - I don’t have college apps (THANKFULLY) but I have…four more study abroad apps to finish. Lots of procrastinating. Ahhh I just hope we all make semis guys! <3 WE CAN DO THIS.
