Does anyone know when was the deadline for last year’s application?
I wish they would tell us when the results for semi-notification will come out! I’m super anxious! I hope that they would come out late November Early December however there is Thanksgiving break so I’m not so sure…

What study abroad programs are you applying for?

@evan241 I finished all my applications and sent them all in. I actually got accepted into one already But I really want to take this gap year and go abroad. I want an interview so I can show them how much I want this. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!
Where do the interviews take place?

@lovinglife01 - YES, CBYX, YFU, and UWC (not study abroad, but pretty awesome).

Last year’s application deadline was November 7th, and if I am correct, notifications began December 1st. Last year notifications were by state/region, and I think everyone was pretty much notified between December 1st and 14th.

So basically, if we’re going off last year’s time frame, they would start November 23rdish. I really don’t think it’ll be that early though…My bet is that they’ll wait 'till after Thanksgiving break, so probably December 1st. However, the AFS wiki (AFS organizes the interviews) makes some references to “late November”…so I think November 24thish I’ll start getting excited (even more excited than I am now hahaha)

Edit: It kinda looks like notifications started in the northeast/New England last year, but I’m not sure

@evan241

I AM ALREADY SUPER SUPER SUPER EXCITED!!!
I hope that they send notifications to the Midwest fairly early!

I definitely understand what you mean! I’m also a senior at the moment, but I still haven’t handed in any apps yet. It is really nerve-wrecking. But I really want this scholarship to take a gap year. I’m planning on applying to a school abroad, so this program will help me a lot. Everything just seems so complicated at the moment! -_-

@salitainfinity25, I know y’all… I’m so excited/nervous. I can’t sleep, eat or even begin to start my enormous pile of bio homework! I really want to take a gap year too. But, if I go away I’ll lose my 1 spot… Does anyone else grapple with a similar issue? It’s so conflicting!

@evan241, As for the deadlines moving up this year, I think that’s a result of the NSLIY scholarship getting more applicants and needing more time to grade the applications/ interview more people this year. I would be over the moon if we got notified over break though!

@fromUSA2Russia, I think summer kids and year kids fly over and stay in either Kyiv or Moscow together and then the summer kids leave in early august; if we both got accepted we might get to hangout! squee Just curious though, what do you think about Russia’s current stance on foreign politics? I’m scared the Russia program might be pulled like it was in Egypt during the 2012 rioting. :-S

Does anyone feel confident they’ll make it to the semis? I do, but can’t seem to rid my mind of the niggling suspicion that I totally screwed up my host family letter and 2nd essay! I would literally cry if we all made it past round 1!!! Good luck everybody!

@Schnuff3

THAT WOULD BE SOO AWESOME IF WE GOT TO HANGOUT TOGETHER!!!
I have read on different NSLI-Y Russian year blogs that they are in either Estonia or Moldova, but they are thinking of possibly having next years programs actually in Russia…
But, yeah, the relationship between USA and Russia isn’t the best right now…
And no, I am confident that I will make the semi-finalist cut, BUT I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, want to!!!
I am not a good writer, so my essays and my letter are both probably not that good…
Ugh, I am so much better at talking! :P

@Schnuff3 I am not confident at all! I was at the beginning but then I found out that it was actually a really competitive program and I lost a lot of hope. My friend who got into YES told me she knows I will get in. Man, I would not be able to handle two rejections in the same month from programs I really want to do.

@Schnuff3
I’m not that confident either! I applied last year but got rejected. Hopefully, this year will be different since it’s the last year I can apply. I don’t want to get my hopes up only to realize that I won’t get it… However, I wish we all can get the scholarship because everyone seems to really want it.
I can’t wait until they start sending out notifications!!

@Schnuff3

I am actually a senior but sometimes I act like a sophomore so that counts right? Hahaha I have been super busy with college apps on top of exchange apps. If I get accepted into my top college and the program then I will just defer for a year if they will hold my place and scholarships.

@evan241

I think I am actually one of the oldest. You are quite close though =)

Yiiiikes !!! I almost forgot to send in my terms & conditions today !!! I would have cried… I worked super hard on my application. Reading this forum makes me nervous… I know if I could make it to the interviews I could surely show my passion in person towards international relations, culture, and language :x

@Obraynerd That would have been bad. Now that all the deadlines for everything have passed, now all we have left to do is wait. I am nervous because I don’t know if my counselor sent in my transcript. I reminded her hundreds of times and she said she would by the 15th but you never know with her.
I also want an interview to show them my passion. I don’t think I was able to show it enough through my application.

Guys, December 1st is so close!!

@girlintheworld and @Obraynerd

All we have to do now is wait!!! I also really hope that I have the opportunity to have an interview, because I don’t know if my application showed my passion for Russia that much…

I really wish Middle Eastern countries weren’t considered so scary :-(. I come from Hawaii so initially I was interested in going to Kazakhstan, Egypt, or Turkey because those are cultures that I have literally never experienced but my parents were quick to say no. :/

@Obraynerd My Dad had no problem for with Turkey. He was worried that I wouldn’t learn the language quick enough and that it wouldn’t help me later. But other than that my parents were okay with any country.

I’ll have to do some convincing with my family if I get in, but I know I can get them on board. When I went to Argentina, they were initially sooooo against Latin America but I managed to convince them, so I know I can convince them on Turkey.

My conversation with my family about NSLI-Y

Me: I’m applying to this full scholarship, can y’all please sign this form?
My parents: Okay

They know I do seemingly crazy things, and they (thankfully) have learned to accept it

@evan241

What program did you go with to Argentina? That sounds so cool!

@fromUSA2Russia

I went with a scholarship for central PA students offered through AFS - the Speedwell Foundation scholarship. Argentina is my love <3

Guys, it’s awesome to think that, now that all of our forms are in…They are going to start reviewing our apps now!!!

Do you think it would be okay for me to call them to make sure they got everything?
