Just got accepted to the China Summer Program at Xiamen!
Congratulations to all who got accepted! If I still haven’t received any email, I guess it means that I didn’t make it this year. Chinese summer.
If you haven’t received an email for summer does that mean you won’t be accepted?
Chinese summer is the largest program it seems like emails get pushed out one by one. If you haven’t heard in the last half hour, you could just be further down the list. I would give it at least through tomorrow before you think you haven’t gotten an acceptance letter.
If you haven’t heard about China summer by the end of the week, precedent suggests you weren’t selected. However, until you receive a rejection letter, you never really know what could happen. Good luck all.
Thank you soooo much for the clarification @bd88db!!!
Any time estimate for Turkey?
Going to Shanghai!
My daughter was in Kunming last year but not through NSLI-Y. Congratulations!
@Xenia_s What did she think of it? What were the city and classes like?
She was at Keats Language school. Kunming is a nice place but I am not sure if NSLI-Y works with them. There are other language schools around the city. Kunming is a very beautiful place! But be prepared that nobody speaks any English there. We stayed in Holiday Inn but even there people could barely speak it.
There is a lot to see in Kunming. Go to The Stone Forest. It is a UNESCO site. Amazing place!
I am going there this summer through NSLIY I’m so excited!
Does anyone know how many alternates are selected? My daughter was notified that she is an alternate for the Chinese program. NSLI-Y is her dream program, and she is happy that there is still hope, but worried she will not get a spot. Thanks in advance for any info.
I’m super glad my son didn’t see this info about suggested # of students to accept for each location or even the total # of students overall as I think I would have been WAY more stressed about my son’s application. That said, if he gets turned down, I’ll know why. If you dig further, it specifies preferences for certain demographic qualities of scholarship awardees. Totally makes sense but sucks if you like my son are a white male from a reasonably affluent region of the country. I’m not saying it puts him out of the running but a lot less likely he’ll be among the finalists. Good luck everyone.
@mom2twoteens where is this information to which you refer?
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Soliciting PMs on the public forum is not allowed. You can PM each other, but you can’t ask for people to PM you in a public post. I deleted a few posts.
Is anyone going to xi’an this summer?
Some thoughts on diversity: In the document from post #347, the only explicitly defined preferences for finalist selection are in these statements “Give preference to applicants who demonstrate the intent and ability to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period and apply their critical language skills later in their professional careers. Give preference to qualified participants who might not be able to study language abroad were it not for the NSLI-Y scholarship.” Other references towards diversity refer more towards outreach and achieving diverse *applicants, but not eplicitly diverse *finalists.
Application materials include numerous pieces, as you all know, and each piece is evaluated several times by different trained evaluators. Those various interpretation all come into play. There are plenty of well qualified applicants that don’t get in because there simply aren’t enough spots. And there are great kids who don’t get in because their application was simply out-competed by other applications that just read better, or had great essays but bombed the interview, or come off as *too confident, or any slightly combination of these and other scenarios.
There are any number of reasons why an applicant might be rejected. At the end of the day, rejected applicants will be hard pressed to understand exactly why.
I’m a shanghai finalist!! Anyone else going to shanghai this summer? If so, what grade are you in?
Finalist for Indonesia! I received my notification at 1:11PM CST.
