NSLI-Y 2018 - 2019

Re: diversity. It’s a diverse bunch, but there are plenty affluent, well-traveled kids who were accepted. The only common thread I’ve seen from the finalist pool is that all of the students seem to be extraordinarily passionate about language. I think it is unfair to the finalists to imply that better candidates were looked over simply because they were not of the right socioeconomic profile.

I’m pretty sure that it’s blind judging as well. They (probably) literally only get your essays, recs, and interview transcript for the finalist selection. I heard it’s 80% essays and 20% interview.

I think Korea notifs will probably come out tomorrow because Idk if the American Councils’ offices will be open on Good Friday (the 30th)

My son will go to Estonia for Russian summer. Its Pre-departure Orientation will be in June 15-17. We live in Chicago. Does that mean NSLI-Y will arrange his flight to DC on June 14 or 15? Thanks!

Crickets on Turkey notification timing?

@stevech Yes. In his acceptance/commitment letter, there should have been an area for him to fill out regarding how he intends to travel to the PDO destination (e.g., train, plane). The implementing organization will arrange for his flight to DC.

Anybody going to Kunming this summer? My daughter received her notification on Tuesday. T

Is anyone else going to Kaohsiung, Taiwan in the summer?

Checked my email, I’m going to South Korea Songdo!!!

@cucumberz7 summer or ay? Congratulations!

Jeonju bound!

Have all Bahasa Indonesia acceptances come out?

I’m wondering if you get an email if you’re rejected? Or do emails only go to people who are accepted?

Summer in Songdo, South Korea!

just got my rejection email. Didn’t think they’d come out on the same day :frowning:

@cucumberz7 congrats! @ccgamer Turns out they did send emails for rejections as well today.

anyone get in for Turkey yet?

Based on precedent these are my thoughts on some recent questions. (Take with grain of salt, I’m just an alum)

@Trizzydrizzy Indonesia notifications are probably all out. They were released and they only have about 15 spots for that programs, so no reason why some would be lagging. So if you haven’t gotten an email yet, signed point to that you weren’t accepted.

@mclmom Some other people have posted that they applied to Turkey but became finalists for Hindi. Since the last two years’ Turkish programs were suspended, that suggests that this year’s program has been too. Additionally, usually Korean notifications are the last to be released. This together suggests no program this year. So if you have not received a notification then perhaps you or your child was not accepted.

@ccgamer You will receive a letter if you are rejected.

@CaliMama1 Alternates get bumped up when other finalists do not accept the scholarship. No way to predict how many spots will become open that way, but it definitely happens.

Just got my rejection letter today… oh well, there’s always next year!

@bd88db Thank you - DC received a rejection for Turkey - as did another Turkey applicant - but I am just curious if part of the reason is there is not a Turkey program this year. I understand people choose alternate programs, but it might also be nice to have an acknowledgement if first choice was not available.
