@averagewannabe I am also going to Jeonju! Is there a group chat?
I think last year it was 30. They also mentioned the Russia numbers. I believe that this year, they said 30 were accepted. But if I remember in literature I saw from years past, it was more like 50.
are any AY notifs out?
Where are you guys getting your numbers?
Each program has different numbers for summer and year participants, as seen in the document in comment #346. I heard that there were not cuts to NSLI-Y this year and that they actually got event more money. This notion is supported on this page: http://www.nsliforyouth.org/nsli-y/ If you scroll down you’ll see a link to a press release that states they have ~670 scholarships for this year (FY18). In comment#346 if you add up the numbers, there were only ~590 scholarships in FY17.
You may be mixing up total scholarship numbers per language with students in each implementing group. For instance, perhaps there are 20 students in the Hindi Summer group in Pune and another 20 students in the Hindi Summer group in Indore for a total of 40 Hindi summer students.
Thank you, @bd88db, for providing that clarity.
They mentioned these numbers during the introduction webinar for applicants who were accepted. You may be right, though. Maybe the webinars were split up and this was just for our group? I’m not sure. I was just surprised the numbers seemed low.
Yea I guess at the end of the day, who really knows?? I guess you’ll find out more clearly when you show up for your PDO.
Hindi AY came out yesterday and I didn’t get an email. Does this automatically mean I was rejected?
^ It suggests you probably were not accepted, but it doesn’t “automatically” mean you’re rejected. It looks seems from announcements on Facebook that both Hindi year finalists and alternates both went out, so it’s looking unlikely for you. But I’d like to think that you haven’t officially been rejected until you receive the rejection letter. You never know what could happen.
Thank you. I appreciate the insight
@cucumberz7 Songdo is a relatively new area near Incheon about 45 to 60 minutes away from Seoul. Your surroundings will be less crowded and newer, I imagine. Would not be surprised if your program is at some new foreign school there.
40 or 50 minutes away from Seoul. Can take metro train or bus. Jeonju will have more traditional Korean sites but people there will speak with a different accent. As a beginner, I rather be at Jeonju area than Seoul. I am sure you will eat a lot of Jeonju bibimbap.
What are the chances of an alternate going to China ?
Hi @ndisawesome there not a chance or percentage that people can give you.
General wisdom is that alternates get bumped up when initial finalists do not accept the scholarship. So it’s really a matter of the individual choices of the finalists, not so much the program.
It’s not uncommon for alternates to become finalists. Some do and plenty don’t.
It may have already been stated here, but I just looked at the “NSLI-Y 2017 - 2018” thread, and Chinese AY was announced 4/7/17, which was a Friday. Does this mean that they might possibly go out tomorrow? My family is aching to get a resolution on this! College decisions hinge on this… 8-0
I think you’re on the right track. These precedents tend to hold true, but not always.
For reference thought, the official word via NSLI-Y (http://www.nsliforyouth.org/how-to-apply/timeline/) just says that everyone will be notified by Apr 23.
I agree. We are well off. My daughter was accepted as a finalist for the Chinese program in Shanghai. I don’t think the selection has anything to do with the socio-economic status.
My daughter was just moved from an Alternate to a Finalist. She is going to Shanghai.
@Xenia_s summer or ay?
