I’ve just been bumped from Alternate to Finalist for Russian Summer in Moldova!
There are certain things that are beyond control, such as how the kid and host family get along. But the intense language learning is not easy. I think every year there are several kids out of more than 20 kids who pass HSK level 6 exam at the end. I actually was pleasantly surprised at the amount of activities they did. I think my kid had the minimal expectation of language improvement and cultural understanding but he got more than that. Returning from China in one month or so. When we spoke with our kid last time, Chinese words kept coming out of his mouth. Lol. Actually reading middle school level Chinese books now!
Guys, I’m a bit conflicted… I got accepted for the Korean summer program, but the college I will be attending has a summer program too… They’re completely different in what they teach, but the college program will give me $2,000 in scholarship money every year and will also offer me a free tutor and cheap book prices (for classes) I don’t know which one to do… I can’t do both, and I’m a senior so both of them are once in a lifetime opportunities… What do you guys think?
Never mind picked NSLI-Y over University of Washington!
@cucumberz7 Sounds like you had a win-win. Congratulations on making your choice and best of luck with it!
@grandscheme thank you! It was a bit difficult to choose, but I think NSLI-Y is far more beneficial in terms of learning and experiencing a different culture and way of life.
@ThinkOn @gmwilson @DevinC4
Sorry for tagging all of you, but I read that you (or your child) is going to Moldova. Is there a group chat anywhere?
@cucumberz7 sorry i’m a little late, but I think nsli-y is a really unique experience. most colleges offer some sort of study abroad, and some are paid for, but I think nsli-y is great because you’re with a host family and you have a LOT of class time dedicated solely to language learning. im sure you will have a bunch of opportunities in uni to study abroad, so good choice my friend! have fun in korea!
@melsbells678 Hi, I am also going on the Moldova trip! Yes, there is a group chat. Also, since you are new to the Moldova group: if you would like more information regarding NSLI-Y, then the Facebook Group, “Ask NSLI-Y” might be helpful. It is a safe environment where you can get helpful information about the program, similar to college confidential.
Gap year after HS and after getting accepted to a private college. Most state college unfriendly towards kids who want to take a gap year and return to claim a reserved spot.
