NSLI-Y 2020-21

Hey! It’s fantastic that you’ve decided to apply to NSLI-Y! Definitely starting early and applying as an underclassmen is a great idea. This way you are able to get a feel of the application and the process, and you get more times to apply. It is amazing to see the growth that comes with just a year!

Take every opportunity you can get to put yourself out there, and I recommend putting most of your effort into the essays. Make sure you reach out to alumni because they are such a helpful resource, and pretty amazing too! Good luck!

DD is applying the Arabic program. Very stressful time with SAT and PSAT prep going on, as well as the school work and team sports. Was hoping to finish the application by the end of Sept, but looks like it will be mid-Oct. Best wishes to everyone.

Are summer alumni more likely to get in for year? Also, do people usually reuse their summer essays for year? (If they’re applying for the second time?

i am wondering the same thing, as I might apply last second for AY

hello everyone, this is going to be my second time applying since i was rejected last year. i am a sophomore applying for the korean summer as first choice and korean academic year as second choice. good luck to everyone!!

Hey, y’all. Just a reminder that applications are due tomorrow at 4 pm EST! I recommend submitting it as soon as possible if you haven’t already. Good luck to all!

Same here (son applied three times, was rejected twice), and it seems that they have a preference for older high school students/incoming college freshmen. I heard that the pre-departure orientation my son attended was close to 50% incoming seniors and 50% fresh high school graduates. There were only a few incoming high school juniors.

@folly553487 oo, thats good to hear, since im a senior. that makes sense though, i cant imagine freshman or sophomore year wanting to take a gap year

hey! i’m a nsli-y turkish summer alum. ik everyone has (hopefully) submitted all their nsli-y apps, but if any of y’all have any qs about nsli-y at all, feel free to pm me!

Anyone else feeling super impatient? December seems so far away :frowning:

Hey all, since the NOFO/Gov file for NSLI that’s been floating around is pretty old, I thought I’d share a more recent one I found/hadn’t seen before. Might be interesting to some.

I’m anxiously waiting for December! I applied and was rejected last year, my first choice being Korean (summer) or Mandarin (summer). I’m applying this year as a junior with my first choice as the Mandarin summer program and the second choice as the Mandarin academic year. I’m overall more confident in my preparation this year, though I’m still a little anxious.

If I end up being accepted into the Academic Year as an incoming senior, how should I deal with FAFSA, credits, etc? Would it essentially just act as a gap year?

Nonetheless, despite the stress, I’m beyond excited! Good luck to y’all!

Is December 1st the projected day when announcement for the semi-finalists will occur???

@Nicetry I’ve heard that results normally come out early December. Gah the nerves ?

oh god i didnt know that it was so soon

Does anyone know which level language speakers go to which cities for the Korean Summer Program?

@Pinkpuff100 beginners go to either Songdo or Jeonju and the more advanced kids go to Seoul

In reading blogs from previous NSYI-Y semi-finalists/finalists, it looks like the notifications for semi-finalists came via email around December 1st at 1 pm-ish East Coast time. Given that December 1st is a Sunday this year, the notification could be coming on December 2nd. Just a guess.

I think this is mainly a maturity issue. My guess would be, one of the difficulties they have faced over the years, and maybe learned to avoid, is sending someone who isn’t sufficiently committed or realistic about what long-term travel overseas can entail, and who becomes a liability. If they send someone who, in the middle of overseas travel, gets cold feet (so to speak), this can be a real problem, as I am sure anyone can appreciate. So I surmise, they are looking for people who can HTFU a little bit, and accept some discomfort in the interest of the bigger picture.

Ok 99.9% sure semifinalist results are coming out December 2nd (like someone said before) @ 4:30 PM EST because looking at the trend it comes out the first Monday of December (normally, just from looking at some past threads).
