NSSI Claims- laptop water damage :(

Has anyone filed a claim for water damage to a laptop through NSSI? D1 spilled water on hers, and it is not working. She is trying to dry it out, but we want to look into filing a claim.

We looked up the claims information, and wondering what other’s experience has been with them and claims.

I once had a claim denied for water damage to a laptop by Circuit City, right before they filed for bankruptcy. My husband was able to take it apart and repair it for practically nothing.

DS had a bed slat fall onto his brand new Garmin GPS (which was on the desk below the bed) and break it. They wouldn’t pay, on the basis that they don’t cover car-related items. We tried to appeal it but got nowhere. I’ll be interested if they cover your claim. Good luck.

Unless NSSI’s coverage encompasses exceedingly carelessness/negligent causes…and spilling liquids on electronics would certainly be considered that by most electronics/computer warranty coverage terms…I’d doubt it.

In fact, all standard laptop warranties I know of would automatically void further warranty coverage if the cause was related to exposure to liquids.

D2 spilled a cup of coffee over her laptop, tried to dry it out etc but it never worked again. NSSI specifically covered accidental damage to laptops, we filed a claim and they paid for a replacement. It’s been a few years now, but if I remember correctly we had to send them the purchase receipts for the original laptop and the repair estimate from the Apple shop. They were easy to work with, the process was very straightforward and I continued to purchase the insurance they offered!

Onetogo2- thanks for the information. We are going to take the laptop to try to get it repaired today and to get the estimate so that we can submit a claim.

Cobrat - NSSI and CSI (the other major provider) student personal property policies specifically cover accidental damage! That’s why you will find numerous threads on CC talking about the virtues of these inexpensive policies. I bought the policy to cover the expensive electronics in his room, but my DS had over $1,000 of designer clothes stolen from the laundry. It covers theft too. (All personal property is covered up to the amount of coverage you purchase) Had a check in a couple of weeks. While extended warranties are nice, a college student is more likely to spill a drink on the laptop or drop it - things that like you noted, would probably void the warranty.

We have AppleCare & they seem to cover water damage. At least if my daughter takes it in!

My daughter’s Apple laptop was in a shoulder bag that got damp as she walked to class in the rain and it stopped working. The warranty did not cover it. Now when I buy anything from Apple I buy all the insurance available. My younger daughter closed some papers inside her laptop and cracked the screen, and they gave her a whole new computer, no questions asked.

You should also check your credit card company, if the computer is over a year old, out of warranty, you may have an extra year of warranty coverage on your master card. Though I don’t know if that covers water damage!

We have never had a problem with NSSI covering any kind of loss or damage, and we have had several! They will cover it. Just call them and ask what they need from you. We had to get a quote from the apple store for the repair, and forward it to them. If you pay up front they will reimburse you. If the store says that it can’t be repaired then they will probably ask for your original receipts. If you call them or email them they will be very helpful.

Verified in DD’s apple notebook and friend’s apple air within last 4 months: Apple delivers.

They replaced and fixed water damages in both cases, for free.

My daughter then fell off bike, her mac got caught between wheel rays (saving her life, as it was a steep hill in traffic). Screen shattered. She used it like that for several weeks, embarrassed to ask for more help.
I convinced her to just ask and see, they mentioned a one off warranty exception and repaired it again to like-new perfection. Needless to say, we are sold on apple and will never again get anything BUT apple.
I had my apple pro since 2008, never ever had a virus or lost data. The antivirus sits there, yawning >_<
