What are the academic requirements for theatre majors? Ie: how many years of English, Math, etc? Is there a lot of freedom to choose classes/weight of course load?

Because NU is on a quarter schedule you have three terms (not including summer) to take classes; this allows many more classes to be taken and double majors, one major and one or two minors, etc. are common. So, yes, there is a lot of freedom to choose classes and weight of course load. There are required courses, I don’t remember them right now, but they cover a wide variety of classes within each requirement.

Theatre majors at NU fall under the distribution requirements for the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences (WCAS). The requirements cover a broad spectrum of classes in the Natural Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Historical Studies, Ethics and Values, and Literature and Fine Arts. For exact info, google WCAS distribution requirements.

Most students find they can easily fulfill the requirements, along with getting in plenty of theatre classes, in their freshman year, definitely by early in their sophomore year. Within each main category, there are PLENTY of classes to choose from. As well, your AP classes will count toward the distribution requirement provided your test score matches the criteria for each class. (Full disclosure, though, the standards are very high, with many classes requiring 5s.) Also, you may place out of the foreign language requirement (if you choose to pursue a BA instead of a BS) or get credit for one of the two years depending on how you do on the placement exam.

I hope that helps. Please feel free to ask more oif you have any additional questions!
