1320-1500 is the 25-75 percentile. The average doesn’t necessarily cut in the middle of that range just as median doesn’t necessarily equal to the mean. I think if you go over some definitions of stats terms, you’ll figure it out.

The drop, if any, after the melt should be very minimal actually because when you have about 2000 students, it takes quite many best scorers to withdraw (happens probably only if HYPMS take many cross-admits off their waitlists) to drop the average by even a few points. If you don’t see how, try to simiulate 2000 data points that has 1320-1500 as 25-75 percentile and average of around 1400 on excel and play around with it. It’d be a good exercise for you. Actually if last year average was 1397 at this time of the year, there was actually a GAIN of 1 point by the fall because I remember I read the NU’s article about last year’s freshman class and the average was 1398.
