This seems like a really stupid question, but I’ve been looking over financial aid stuff all day and I’m going cross-eyed. Simple as this: to apply for the NU Loan, do I have to have it awarded to me via my letter, or can I just apply for an amount without being “pre-awarded”? The FAQ on the site seems to suggest it would be mentioned in my award letter, which it wasn’t for me. Nowhere else (that I can see - like I said, I feel like I’m going blind!) does it say it needs to have been awarded to me for me to apply. Anybody know the answer?

Hi Perididdle~I think I understand your question…from our experience:
The Financial Aid office sends you an award notice. It lists what scholarships and Federal loans/work study. It lists the estimate costs and your family contribution. This family contribution amount is also referred to as “Total Resources”.
The second page of information is information on the loans-Perkins, Stafford, and Parent Loans. The latter-NU Loan-you apply for online. You can seek a NU Loan for the full amount of your family contribution or less. I think it takes less than a week for a decision.
I hope this answers your question.

That is helpful, APOL! I was thinking along those lines, but they randomly showed on the Loan FAQ page a “sample” award letter showing “NU Loan” on the award list. It totally threw me off, and after a long day, I had no idea what to do!

We’re still deciding on which loan to pursue, but it is nice to know we have a little time if it takes less than a week.

Thank you!

You are welcome. My eyes glazed over, too, when our DD" was a freshman. Let’s face it…EVERYTHING seems to be a 90 degree angle learning curve the first year. (DD is now a senior-Woot!)
