NU Short Answer Essays

For NU Short essays, the ones about the roommate and possessions, what did you guys put? I am really struggling with these two essays. Do the admission officers want a creative response or a sincere one. What do you guys think?

well, they are trying to see, first of all, how creative you are, and how succinct you can be! (concise.) Basically, yes, they want a very creative response, showcasing who YOU are…do’t do what you THINK they want, do whgat you think YOU want…if you know what i mean. Like, for the oil portrait, i put “i want my stuff ring-tailed lemur surrounding me.” Who says that anyways? lol. It shows … (after i said more about how it represents rare aesthetic beauty compared to my future major) … that i can be short in speech yet unique. You have to think really hard, BUT, for the roommate one, just look online for a random character they never heard of before so that you won’t be another one of the, “i want to have harry potter!” drools" lol. Don’t worry. You will be fine, just write it as clearly, concisely, and creatively as you can, without going over the top!! GOOD LUCK  :D

that sounds ridiculous and unrepresentative of yourself. i dont know if i’d take that advice, personally.

Yeah . . . I think what Jeremybeach is saying is that it’s best to be creative in your responses.

But make sure you don’t go overboard - don’t just google around for ideas and choose the weirdest ones you happen to find. Your answer should definitely be genuine. For the possessions essay, think of what your passions are - chances are you can incorporate them into your 50 words and still sound unique. And as far as the roommate question, you can choose to be funny or serious, it’s up to you - just make sure you’ve actually READ the book or SEEN the movie the character is from, so that you don’t risk sounding, well, dumb.

For the roommate question, I chose Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice, and for the possession question, I included my flute, a pen and blank paper, and a foreign language dictionary, with a short explanation for each. Nothing too special, right? But I got in ED.

You have the right idea. Your answers should be a sincere reflection of who you are, not an attempt to come up with the craziest thing you can think of. Sure, that would catch NU’s attention - but probably not in the way you’d want it to.

yea i agree. like what taryn said, dont go crazy with the oil portrait one…its really not supposed to be a hard question. be yourself.

I agree. There is no “right” way to answer these questions. They are looking to see who YOU are, what you are about, what you hold in high esteem and if you can express those thoughts within the # of words specified.

You could choose “Sponge Bob” as your ficitonal character if you wanted to…nowhere does it say that the character has to come from a movie or literature.

Don’t think so much about what you think they are looking for. Instead, think about who YOU are, write a draft and then finesse it so it reads well. Let your application be a reflection of what kind of person you are, given they have probably not met you and this is there only opportunity to try to figure out what you are all about and whether or not you’d be a good fit for NU and NU for you! Good luck.

there

** THEIR only opportunity** (didn’t proof read)
