Nu Tv

For current students, what tv channels do you have? Also, what are your feelings towards the the tv-through-computer system: good, bad, why…?

I’m not going to lie - I hate NUTV (it’s probably the determining factor in why I never watch television). We have: CSPAN (1&2), A&E, CNN, Comedy, Disney, Discovery, ESPN (1&2), Entertainment, MTV, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, USA, VH1, and then the local broadcast channels. I don’t like it because the channels I watch at home are not offered, and you have to harass NUTV so much to get it to work properly that I find it’s hardly worth it. The good thing about television through the internet, however, is that if you and your roommate want to watch different things at the same time, you can.

when you say local channels, does that include the big 6-cbs,abc,nbc,fox,upn, and the wb. I know most will have the first four, but I wasn’t sure about upn and the wb.

how do you get television throught the internet?

Is it possible to record tv shows offered through the computer? I would like to know, in case if I had to study a lot one night if I could tape the show (like one would do on a vcr) and watch it the following day.

elevenblanks - NUTV is a system that the university has set up so students living on-campus can watch TV through their computers that are hooked up to the internet. The dorms don’t have cable, so this is the only way students can really watch TV.

Sonata - no, you can’t record anything from NUTV (as far as I know). What people usually do is commandeer the TV lounge (most dorms have one) and record shows on the VCRs in there.

so then all those channels you mentioned before are offered on nuTV, which is only on the computer? You can’t get those channels on the tv?

No, you can not get any of those channels through TVs in your room. The rooms are not wired for cable, so if you have a tv, the only way you can watch it is if you have those “rabbit ear” things and then you can get fuzzy local broadcast stations. There isn’t a way to pipe NUTV through a television set. The tv lounges, however, do have cable and they have more channels than is offered on NUTV.

So, wait, is NUTV hooked up to your computer through a port, or do you get it streaming over the Internet? I would think if it came streaming through the Internet it wouldn’t be of regular TV quality.

You stream it through the internet, so no, it is not as good as tv quality. It also has issues with running properly while other programs are running. Sorry if I’m bad at explaining this - the long and short of it is that you stream tv channels through the web via a system the university has set up. Hope that clears things up!

i’m a big tv fan, and that kind of sucks… but maybe it would help me focus more on my studies ;)

One of my friends hooked up his TV as a second monitor once, so I imagine you could do that…

I’m sure people with laptops dont do that though
