NU, USC, or U of Mich?

u of mich-ann arbor

I’ve heard all 3 are pretty much on the same academic level. The rankings show some difference between them but I’ve heard US News rankings are a bunch of baloney…

I want to double is Communications and Art History. Life after college is most important to me so a school that is highly regarded by most employees is ideal. And NYC is my destined city so working there after college would be a dream. And I love diversity and social people.

Thanks for your help!!

Both Northwestern and USC have their own communications schools and both are at the top of a short list of excellent programs that have good to great internships and alumni pipeline for jobs post graduation., but understand that the strongest pipeline from USC-Annenberg would be in California and the strongest pipeline from Medill OR the Comm school is Chicago (and less so the west coast for Film & TV)…that’s not to say you won’t be able to get a job in NY…

UMich has a small department within LSA. You don’t have to major in communications, though, to get a job in communications…You could major in english, creative writing etc…I don’t know about the pipeline for jobs from UMich to NY in the communications industry…

and, yes, in the case of someone who wants the strongest comm program, USNWR is a bunch of baloney (unless you are going to a top Ivy and majoring in anything you want…)

BTW, make sure the schools you are looking at allow you take the art history double major; depends on requirements…

Thank you Rodney!! That was incredibly helpful.

No problem; just curious…Why didn’t you apply to Newhouse at Syracuse (other than the weather issue??)…just interesting given your criteria for NY after graduation and alumni reputation/pipeline

NU’s art history department is, I believe, one of the top departments nationally, though verify that yourself. I personally know some of the proffessors and they’re incredible, but thats anecdotal. And I know you can double major in those two, but you’d have to apply to be in communication and double major into Art History (In the CAS), though transferring between those two schools is very easy if you prefer to apply to the college.

arbiter: I see…thank you for taking the time to contribute to the threads…seriously your answers are so helpful!

rodney: I’m from CA and wasn’t really familiar with Syracuse…and I guess only the really “big” name schools seemed like an option if I were to take the chance of moving far from home.

I would definitely consider Northwestern if your interests are Art History and Communication. NU has the top programs and access to some of the best museums in the Midwest.
