NU vs U Chicago (international student)

Hey guys,

I would like to know the pros and cons of NU and U Chicago from an international student’s perspective. I have been awarded the Murphy Institute scholarship and the Deans Scholarship at NU (with full need based aid). I have also received the merit scholarship at U Chicago (all expenses covered). I hope to study Applied Mathematics.

I would like to know the characteristics of both universities and here is some criteria to start with:

 1. International recognition of the unis
 2. Future employment prospects
 3. Strength of Alumni network
 4. Quality of Academics and Professors

I have three days to decide, given the extension that has been given to me.

Any help would be appreciated regarding the above criteria or any other information you may have.

Thank you very much.

On those 4 criteria… they’re basically identical.

The main differences come in the atmosphere of the school/ student body.

The curriculum is very different in both schools. You will be studying mostly pure math at UChicago, not applied math and certainly not the kind of applied math at NU. Compare them and see which one fits your interest the most. There’s a reason why the applied math at NU is housed in the engineering school. You will have no trouble to find interesting research as the student:faculty ratio in the applied math department is very small.
