Nude Hosiery....finally making a comeback!

I grew up wearing nude hose (and slips under skirts and dresses in the 70’s and 80’s). Anyway, I do try to follow fashion trends, even at the ripe old age of 54. However, nude hosiery has been a faux pax now for a few years…too old lady. I’ve hated that in the winter months, as it looks ridiculous not to wear hose with skirts. I’ve all but given up on colored skirts that don’t look good with sheer black hose or tights.

Well, I just recently read they are finally! coming back into style! I don’t care what anyone says…after a certain age our knees start to wrinkle and hose make them look much nicer. Kate Middleton has been wearing them. I read that the no shine, as close to the color of your skin is the way to go! So…is anyone as excited about this as I am. Of course, this is only in the winter.

Personally I never stopped wearing them and I introduced my daughters to them and they are not afraid to wear them either. They only look old lady on old ladies. i.e. if they are “orthopedic” looking and you wear them with old lady shoes. I hate wearing pants so I wear hose very day, summer-winter. And the other ladies in the office who sit near me have started wearing them as well so I figure they can’t look that bad. I’ve tried going without and I felt naked and COLD. Try Lleggs Silky Essence - they are comfortable (non-itchy) and in my opinion they look good - and aren’t too expensive.

That’s exactly the brand I read about Lleggs Silky Essence…I’m going out an gettin’ me some!

Finally. Aside from feeling cold without something on my legs, i find it uncomfortable to not have something on my feet when wearing shoes (closed toe shoes and not sandals).

I am so disappointed with this thread. :)

I thought this thread was about nude history. Old eyes. .)

I think that all of the anti-hosiery/strapless/sleeveless stuff has been driven by actresses standing on red carpets in Southern California. In the middle of winter. A woman, even an 18-yr-old, walking around with strappy sandals, bare legs, and no sleeves in December in my state is going to look HIGHLY unattractive, not to mention like an idiot. Gooseflesh is not cute.

I try to avoid wearing hose just because I don’t particularly like how it feels. I never wear hose when it’s hot. Ugh. That’s why I have gotten to the point of wearing pants almost all the time. :)

Hue used to make hosiery that was really interesting: pale pastels with tiny dots, sheer black with a seam up the back, and so on. I liked wearing that. In the colder months.

@dstark‌ - I had the same initial reaction. lol

Bookreader, lol!

It is more of an issue in the winter with strappy sandals/shoes for cocktail dresses, though? What do you wear if you want to put on a shorter dress with some strappy sandals in the winter and aren’t 25? It’s tough!

Thank goodness! I was just writing over in the leggings thread that I wear professional dresses or suits and high heels for work. I hate how naked my legs look and the shoes hurt my feet without the slippery comfort of stockings. I think it just looks unfinished and ridiculous.

I don’t follow fashion trends at all and have never stopped wearing nude hose, along with black in the winter. I did skip them in the summer when dressed casually. I don’t wear strappy sandals, only flats! I can’t believe people change their wardrobe with fashion trends, but then I am still wearing skirts I have had for over 15 years.

Kate Middleton wears them only because the queen requires hose (and no strappy sandals) in royal public appearances. If she were a “commoner” I doubt she’d be wearing nude hose.
Personally, for those occasions where I would need hose (such as a special occasion in the winter), I like nude tightly-woven fishnet instead of nude hose; it looks younger and fresher to me.

PG, I’m curious - can you find a picture of those and post a link? I can’t picture what you describe.

Google Donna Karan The Nudes fishnet and you should find it. You could get it in any major dept store - Nordstrom, Saks, Neiman-Marcus, etc. It gives just enough cover so you’re not bare-legged, but isn’t as “thick” of a layer as regular nude hose.

Actually, when I googled a while back about Kate Middleton and nude hose, one article said that she had been wearing them since back in her college days (St. Andrew’s?), which I assume would pre-date any edict from the Queen.

Who knew that one was supposed to dress the same for decades on end, regardless of comfort or common sense! Flats make my feet ache, as do high heels, and well, “nude” of course, is subjective. One can look perfectly well put together without high heels or hose, but I understand dress codes in the business world-kind of like ties are required for men. I notice most of those ties come off the minute the guys hit the street though!

OK… I googled what PG suggested and can’t find them. If anyone else does, can you provide a link?

sseamom it would be quite a sight if the hose came off the minute the women hit the steet

“One can look perfectly well put together without high heels or hose, but I understand dress codes in the business world-kind of like ties are required for men. I notice most of those ties come off the minute the guys hit the street though!”

Depends where in the corporate / business world. I consult for major companies (household names) and not a single one has a traditional dress code requiring business suits. They haven’t had them for years. Everyone is business casual. The full suit-with-hose look looks very dated these days, like a little girl playing dress up.

Here’s a link. I like them, they are nice looking. Thanks for the tip @Pizzagirl !

ETA: Zoom in on the tights to see the tightly woven fishnet.
