Funny that Spanx is “in” after women went thru all the trouble to burn bras and be “liberated”

Our bodies have un-liberated us…gravity beats all.

No hose, no spanx, no slips!!! I will do a unlined cami in the winter just for an extra layer on top. ;)

Oh gosh how I hate hose. As a card carrying member of the hose generation of the early 80’s, I had to wear them to work 5 days a week. At that time I was about 118 lb dripping wet. And at 5’8" I had to sew darts into the waist band of pants just so they wouldn’t gap. But hose…they always functioned as a tourniquet. I tried many different brands…from the true cheap Woolworth (remember them!) brand to the expensive department store brands. The elastic band was always so narrow it just gouged into me at the completely wrong spot and left not only marks but actual stomach problems. I tried larger sizes…trying all the way up to queen size. I would actually cut the elastic band and then wear a pair of girdle undies which I ‘borrowed’ from my mom. This would keep the ‘panty’ hose in place. The reason I like leggings and some of the newer tights is they have a wider waist band. So, unless they make them with at least a 1.5 band…no way would I go back.

Stockings with a garter belt (never heard the term 'hold ups") aren’t an option either…one wides up sitting on the buckles. And those elastic top stockings (usually sold at a lingerie store) don’t really stay put. Plus, if one has even the slights bit of extra flesh where the elastic on the top hose end, then one winds up with a roll.

Gravity is too liberating. Gotta rein in all that freedom! If my bras were like the stuff my mom wore, I’d burn them, too!

“I wear slips with any dress or skirt that is not lined and I wish others would too. I don’t think people realize just how see through things are sometimes”

^^Oh, thank you for the PSA!!

My favorite hose is Wolford. They are expensive, but I get more wear out of a pair of Wolfords than out of any other comparable density hose. The color that they call Gobi is perfect for creating nicely tanned leg effect.

Pizzagirl, I will have to try those fishnets. They look awesome.

not a fan of pantyhose. I will see what D’s do and follow. that is how I stopped it in the first place.

I am a college professor and I see the young women wearing nude hose again. They are definitely back. However, they are sheer nude hose (not the “suntan” Leggs of yore).

I don’t understand the hate for them. They hide spider veins and freckles. Most women look better in them. Also, legs and feet in enclosed leather shoes without stockings=red blotches, goosebumps, blisters, sweat and odor. Thanks, Kate Middleton, for making it OK for women to wear stockings again. I, for one, am delighted.

I don’t worry anymore, nude or not. I only wear pants, pant suits, and no high heels. I save high heels for very special occasion which there has not been many.

Well, after reading everyone’s comments I’ve decided to go back to pantyhose on occasion and try the nude fishnet. Don’t know if those would seem a little to risqué in a Fortune 500 company or not…but after 27 years there, I think everyone pretty much knows I’m not a hooker. I still like tights a d boots…but when I want to wear my red shoes or whatnot with a skirt in December…bare legs aren’t attractive and I’m not crazy with colored tights with red shoes.

Oh…I will forego anything on my feet with closed toed heels when wearing straight leg jeans.

I used to wear “thigh highs” by Jockey. They had elastic at the top that went around your thighs. I don’t know if they still make them, but they solved the problem of feeling constricted at your waist.

Someone above mentioned the importance of a thicker waistband - I think that is true - or a lower waistband - I truly don’t want ANYTHING right at my waist - not my undies, not my tights, not my pants!

I got thigh highs once and thought being constricted around the thighs ten times worse than around the waist. I used to buy queen size hose so it didn’t grab me around the waist. It seemed to fit fine in the legs even though I was not very overweight. To me tights and panty hose are the same except tights don’t run as easily. Though I wore some recently that got caught in the laser cut outs of the taffeta skirt and were incredibly annoying, I ended up having to take them off.

Thigh highs are better for a few reasons:

if you get a run in one, then as long as you buy several in the same color, you can save the other one.

When using the potty, you don’t have to deal with getting the hose back up…(I hated this part, often the panty would end up a few inches too low…ugh!)

Cooler!!

I always had issues with them both rolling down on me. Do they not start rolling anymore?

I didn’t like the thigh high grabbing my leg either. I do wish the elastic in the waist of hose were a little loser…sometimes I have been known to cut it a little, and I’m not overweight. I do like how they hold in my stomach a little though.

Are all of you ladies 55+ who do not wear pantyhose have legs without bumps and veins and tanned even in winter?
I don’t like to wear pantyhose but when I want to wear a dress in winter that does not look good with tights, a cocktail dress for instance, my legs need the extra boost of sheer hose. I know I’m not especially fond of seeing women of a certain age and bare veiny legs in winter without hose just because it’s not in style…

Lassie, you are not alone. :)

Well, I don’t work in an office with a dress code and I live in Seattle, where it rains all winter. I favor capri’s in the summer-and yes, my legs aren’t what they used to be, but I don’t really care-and in the winter I usually wear pants. So, I’m not much of a skirt or dress person.

When I DO wear them, in summers I go bare legged. I don’t wear mini skirts and it’s not like people are going to be staring at my feet-well, maybe they are, but that’s THEIR fetish! In the winter if I wear a skirt, it’s a longer skirt that I can wear with boots, and I usually wear warm socks with them. No one sees any of my legs at all because the skirts are longer than the height of the boots. I imagine that if I worked someplace where there was a dress code, I would find a way to put up with pantyhose every single day, but I’d probably be looking for a new job while I did so.

Think this look for winter: http://www.onestopplus.com/clothing/Flared-knit-skirt-by-Ellos.aspx?PfId=168551&DeptId=26930&ProductTypeId=1&ppos=8&Splt=0#.VDa0hBY9H0k

and this look for warm weather: http://www.onestopplus.com/clothing/Flared-denim-skirt.aspx?PfId=201796&DeptId=26930&ProductTypeId=1&ppos=19&Splt=0#.VDa07RY9H0k

I hope I am not hurting anyone’s eyes when I dress this way.

My “nude” fishnets wear like steel. In fact I think I have only ever owned two pairs —in fairness I don’t wear them a lot but they last forever bc no runs.

I’m 55. My legs are not perfect, but no veins and my skin tans easily and holds some color all year around. If the outfit is cute and the shoes are respectable, I’m thinking that is what attracts the eye more - not the knee to ankle part of my legs! I do exercise on a regular basis so my calves are fairly toned. Now, don’t get me wrong - dead of winter and I’m almost 100% wearing leggings or perhaps tights with my skirts/dresses - I really have no occasions where I have to dress to the nines - rarely anything beyond business casual or maybe a step up - thank goodness!!!
