Number of recruiting spots in rowing

Are there set numbers of recruiting spots per year or do the coaches have some flexibility? For example, does a team basically recruit a boat of nine (eight rowers plus a cox) or could there be fewer or more in a given year? Does it depend on the size of the team? I know of one school that seems to have verbally committed an entire boat, but they have more official visits scheduled this weekend and next. Are the OVs for the coming weekends just back-ups?

Thanks.

Given your first thread, I assume you are talking about Ivy schools. If that is the case, then yes, the number of supported recruits is capped. Since crew is not a carve out sport (like football with a league wide limit on recruits per year), the number of likely letter eligible recruits may be different school to school, but they are likely to be close to each other. I would ask the recruiting coach how many recruits they can support for a likely letter in a given cycle.

Women’s rowing or men’s? Women can have a max of 20 scholarships in D1 and D2, but it is an equivalency sport so those can be split. Men have their own rules about scholarships since it is not NCAA.

The following is from a 2003 article in the Harvard Crimson:

Note that the number of recruits for an individual sport can be adjusted by the AD so some sports can have fewer and some less than the 1.4 multiplier.
