Number of Schools, Parents, HELP!

For CC Parents and Students,

My main goal is to attend college outside my home state or Florida. I feel like I am a competitive applicant who has the possibility of doing so with the use of scholarships from schools. I was hoping to apply to 5-6 out of state schools as well as my 2 instate safeties for a total of 7-8 schools. My parents are being somewhat difficult and saying that they would prefer if I applied to 4ish. I am having a very difficult time narrowing my list down to 4 schools (including my 2 instate schools) and I was wondering what other people’s views are on this. Should I only apply to 4 or do you think that it would give me a better shot of going out of state if I applied to 7-8? I understand applying to college can get expensive when you deal with app fees, sending scores, and transcripts, so I have offered to possibly pick up the cost of 1-2 schools in order to better please my parents. However, this isn’t convincing them. I could use any advice, tips, or opinions. Also any reasons or justification for applying to 7-8 schools would be much appreciated as I am talking to my parents about all this soon. Thank you!

How about sequencing your schools based on your preferences and the due dates for the applications? A lot of state schools have rolling admissions or early action options that are non-binding. It sounded like you are not looking at an early decision option. Have your applications ready to go if necessary and hopefully, you will get an acceptance early enough to avoid the additional applications. If that doesn’t work for you, I would recommend talking with your guidance counselor or school college counselor and see if they can help you narrow down the list or talk with your parents about the most optimal group and number of schools.

ask your parents what the issue is? if it’s cost of application, you can find schools like Case Western and tulane that have no app fees. If it’s number of essays you have to write, you can limit those with schools that accept the common app or don’t require essays. feel them out.
