Im applying for a transfer, fall '07 (im not sure if the essays are the same as freshman but i think they are) and my question involves the why chicago essay.

how many words is acceptable for this essay? I have almost 800 right now and im thinking this is too much, given my experience from freshman apps, but I feel I need this many words to explain my reasons for transferring, etc…

is there a set limit like 500, because it doesnt explicitly say it anywhere?

thanks

From the admissions blog:
“We believe at this office that decisions should be made based on what an applicant says, not in how many words it takes him or her to say it (that’s why we have no word limit on our essays.)”

That’s for freshmen, not transfer, but I would assume it’s the same.

thanks a lot, i would assume its the same since im pretty sure the essays are the same as well

if i recall correctly, it says a paragraph or two. most paragraphs aren’t 400 words.

mine is 4 paragraphs and 850 words right now. I have a lot to say to explain why I want to transfer and why Chicago is where I want to go, so it takes a lot of words. Do you think that I should cut it down still?

it’s a tough call. i mean for my favourite books/poems/artists essay i had five short paragraphs, but it was still only 300 words. but i did go over the word limit on a few college essays, and i’m not worried. if you really believe that it’s relevant, i think its fine to leave it. but try to condense?
