Number of years stay in community college

I am wondering if the number of year stayed in a community college would affect the chance of admission? Cuz I stayed in a CC for 3 years instead of 2 years that people normally do. Would it takes into account for the admission officer to review the applicant? I really want to go Cal and UCLA as my GPA is in the range that would likely be accepted and I had all my pre-req done. I am Math major student. Thanks!

No it does not affect the number of years, you can stay at a community college endlessly.
Now, the number of units you have is another thing… you must have at least 60 units to transfer. And should NOT exceed 80 units i think…

No it does not affect you. And believe it or not, these days 3-4 years is the norm because there so many classes people need to take and so few classes available.

The unit cap thing only applies to students who are looking to transfer but already have credit from a 4-year institution already. If all your units are from a CCC, they don’t care how many you have as long as its over 60.

You can exceed 80 units, but only 70 will be counted by the UCs.

It really does not matter. I am an older transfer student. My TAG has been approved for UC Davis and I will be attending tin the fall. I started cc in 1973 and have attended on and off for almost 30 years. What matters is that your IGETC or GE’s are done, your GPA and pre reqs for your major. Then you write about yourself and your situation in your essays. I also have about 200 units, all from cc, but they will only be using the normal number needed to transfer, 60.

O…thanks guys!
I thought that 2 years completion of CCC is harder than 3 years as it required more units per semester which may makes a student more competitive.

then how will the ucs count the gpa? will they choose the first 70 units?

Not sure. I have 3.9 at my current cc which I have been taking classes at on and off for 20 years. But back in the 70s I got a D a few Cs and one F. So when my TAG was approved by Davis they showed my GPA as 3.47. I have a feeling your GPA is cumulative from all the cc’s you have ever gone to. In other words they counted a lot more than just the 70 units.

They’ll count all your units subject wise (pre-reqs etc), but will not count more than 70 units toward the minimum 120 units needed to graduate.

I don’t think it will affect your admissions into your undergrad unless you do something ridiculous like 3+ years w/o valid explanation. Might also affect your graduate school plans…but don’t worry about it lol.
