Nursing at Gustavus Adolphus?

As the title reveals, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with or information about the nursing program at Gustavus. Any experience or info about the college in general?

Gustavus has a thorough description of their nursing curriculum under the Academics tab of their home page.

I'm a junior at Gustavus, and I have many friends who are in the nursing field. To begin with, it is a program where you have to apply to get into. It is based on grades, so you have to do VERY well in VERY hard classes.

Second, if you don't get into it by sophomore year be prepared to go five years at Gustavus. It is a TWO-year program. If you apply in your sophomore year and don't get in, you will go on a waiting list.

If you do get in, it is hard and demanding, but when you graduate you are a certified nurse. It isn't pre-nursing, you can actually start a career as a nurse. With all the amazing professors you have there, it will probably no hardship of finding a job.

I'm not trying to scare you from this major, but just warning you! At Gustavus, Nursing is hard to get into and a challenging major but when you're done, you won't need to take any more classes!

Plus if you don't want nursing there are so many other majors you could fall back on. Or some people even transfer to Mankato State University or the U. Gustavs is an amazing school and I would total recommend applying. Don't be discouraged though by what I have told you! If you really want to go into nursing then apply and see where it goes! Good luck. If you have any questions about nursing or GAC, please feel free to e-mail me at

Good luck

Thanks for taking the time to reply with the useful info. I know what you are talking about with regards to applying specifically to nursing after the first year. My daughter has a couple of schools on her list that admit you directly to the BSN program, but we are still searching for the LAC/nursing combo like Gustavus. Glad to hear you are enjoying Gustavus, I think it sounds like a great school and would be happy if my D went there as long as she could enter the Nursing program. I'm glad you let us know that it isn't at all a given.

St Olaf also has a LAC/nursing combo--worthwhile to visit both schools.
