Nursing School Suggestions

@comtnmom Would your daughter’s illness preclude working as an EMT/paramedic? I ask because my son’s girlfriend had a lot of success in both nursing school, and obtaining her first choice job because she was an experienced paramedic.

She went to James Madison University in Virginia. JMU doesn’t admit by major, so it lacks the direct admit requirement. The program is also very competitive when students declare their major sophomore year. Interestingly, the BSN program offers a minor in Chronic Illness.

She decided not to bother with the actual nursing BSN and went the Health Sciences route. She joined the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, which actually abuts campus, got her EMT certification, then worked her way up to paramedic. After graduation she earned an accelerated Nursing BSN in 18 months at Shenandoah University right up the highway, about an hour from JMU.

JMU would offer a traditional campus experience, but the rescue squad provided a built in social group for both my son and his girlfriend. Think of it as the most intense volunteer focused fraternity you can belong to. It’s a 100% volunteer agency with around 200 people that work there unpaid.
