I want to go to University of Pittsburgh but I’m not sure what program to go for. Which program should I choose? Nursing or Business??

Jeepers! Big difference there! How can you not know if you want to be a nurse or a businessperson?

i’m going to be a junior in the nursing program. Let me know if you have any questions…

@LukeNessMonster both careers interest me i just don’t know which one interests me more

@panthernation: do you go to upitt? if you do how are the inter oppurtunites there??

If you choose nursing, you need to be prepared to make a huge commitment to it. It’s a very demanding program, one of the best in the country, and you will have very few electives. It seems to me that nursing is more of a vocation than just a job.

Have you volunteered in a hospital or shadowed a nurse? Are you strong in the sciences? What are your “stats”?

@trossi2121: yes i do go to upitt…as for the inter-opportunities, it’s what you make out of your education. many of the professors in the nursing school do a lot of research, which is an available option to students interested. I am currently participating in the undergraduate research mentorship program with one of my professors. i personally love it, but i would not have had the opportunity if i did not search for it. other things going on in the school of nursing is the NSA (Nursing Student Association) and they do stuff like clothing drives, pitt nursing clothing sales, etc…

@mrsref: freshman year during your orientation to the nursing school class, you shadow a nurse for 2 hours i believe one day. other than that, I have volunteered in a hospital for a few years before upitt, and i participated in an allied health program senior year of high school which had me shadowing nurses and other healthcare professionals in all types of areas…Strong in the sciences? Since being at pitt, I have not taken a math class other than stat for evidence based practice. As for sciences, there is a chem class designed for healthcare professionals that involves general chem, biochem, and ochem. other than that, it’s the usual classes all nursing majors usually take, i believe. But I would say I am strong in the sciences, it’s all I took in high school instead of history classes. As for “stats”, I am an average students, my GPA is above a 3.5, I pull all-nighters a lot to study and cram for the tests because of how much material there is (memorizing about 1000 powerpoint slides for micro & knowing 60some drugs inside and out for pharm). I do have a social life though, joined a fraternity on campus, and enjoy myself on the weekends.

LurkNessMonster is correct though. the curriculum here is EXTREMELY demanding, do not expect to come here and take 12 credits. I have maxed out at 18 credits just about every semester I have been here and it is a lot of work. Some classes in the program are 5-7 credits with clinical and lab, and it takes a toll when not trying to ruin a GPA. the faculty is great, you have to be willing to ask for help though or else you wont succeed. If you need something, youre going to need to go to office hours or the study sessions put together by TAs before exams and such…Overall the program here is absolutely amazing and I can not see myself going anywhere else. HAIL TO PITT

@panthernation – my questions were to the OP. These are the kinds of things that may help him/her decide between nursing and business.
