Nutrition and Food Studies at Steinhardt!!!

I am applying to Steinhardt RD under this major because I want to be a food writer. I never hear anyone going in under this and I was wondering if anyone knew how competitive it was? On the site it says average grades of at least B and sat scores in the 1100-1300 range … this doesnt sound too difficult (but my sats were pitiful!) Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! :)

I don’t know anyone who is in that program, sorry, but if it states that they want scores in the 1100-1300 range then that’s probably where your scores should be. That’s low for NYU anyway so to go much lower would probably not give you a very good chance. If you want to be a writer, why wouldn’t you major in journalism? The ‘writing’ part of being a writer is what you need actual training in, not the ‘subject’ part. The program in Steinhardt is likely for people who want to be nutritionists, healthcare workers, dietitians, etc.

I agree with matth. If you want to be a writer: major in journalism, even if food is your topic of choice. For example, I would venture most restuarant critics for NY Times, Zagat’s, etc did not major in nutrition but are more likely to have some writing intensive liberal arts degree. If you do want to study something like journalism, I would also cuation you against applying to this program as some type of “backdoor” into NYU since GSP students are the only ones gauranteed an internal transfer.

Good luck.
