His reason for choosing Yale isn’t all that different from why most of us have opted to be in New Haven for the next four years. What is astonishing is the hostility expressed in so many of the comments posted by readers! He writes in an analytic and somewhat self-absorbed way, but he certainly doesn’t deserve such vitriolic criticism. Here is the link to his latest blog.
Did he say that he chose Yale?

this guy is smug and self-important… I’m pretty sure he hasn’t won any national awards in math or science so he’s really not a big deal.

umm… but he has a column in the New York Times?

I’m pretty sure not everyone is interested in Math or Science and that not everyone at HYP has awards in those fields… though I might be wrong about that.

@desiw: Yes he said that he chose Yale.
@eating food: It’s a thing that the NYT did this year, “Demystifying College Admissions and Aid”. They invited a group of high school seniors to write about their application experiences. It’s sort of like a diary type of thing, so he’s not exactly a NYT columnist, and judging from his prose, he’s got a long way to go should he plan to become one.

I don’t think he deserves such criticism either. Sure one feels a sense of smugness reading his pieces, but in all fairness, the guy is entitled to a little self-congratulation after his mega-successful application run. And i don’t think any of us knows the guy personally, so let’s not comment on whether or not he’s achieved national awards. I don’t think that ALL HYP acceptees have anyway.
