NY Times gift link: Home Care Aides Fight to End 24-Hour Shifts: ‘This Work Is Killing Them’

gift link

My mom had aides that typically worked 12 hour shifts. They tended to be paid poorly and I don’t believe they got the overtime they earned but they and we didn’t make waves because they needed the jobs and we needed the care. (A agency provided and paid them.) Quality of care varied but we felt fortunate we could afford it and that it kept mom safe and comfortable.

It’s not reasonable or safe to be “on” 24/7. That’s how people get injured, like when we are sleep deprived with young infants but with elders there’s even more to attend to.

This problem will only balloon as we boomers age and there aren’t enough solutions to provide adequate care.
