NYC Day Schools & Boarding School notifications / decision deadlines

For those of us applying to NYC day schools as well as BS, there is an impossibly tight window for decisions.

According to ISAAGNY, NYC day schools will notify Feb 23 and decisions must be received by March 14, with BS dates shifted almost a month ahead: notification day is March 10 and decisions are due April 10.

Students evaluating an admit to an NYC day school who receive an accept to BS will have only four days to decide between them. That is an incredibly tight window for such a major decision.

Anyone BTDT & want to share how it went in practice?

I am in the same predicament for a day schools (not NYC) as well. We actually have to notify them of our enrollment decision before M10 but I’ve been told by many that day schools can accommodate and we can email AO’s. I’m not worrying too much because this day school I am applying to is highly rejective and my interview went horribly.

It will help if you do the follow-up visits at the day schools where you are accepted to pick your favorite as it will limit the number of negotiations you’ll need to manage to one. Seems obvious, but doesn’t always happen.

You can tell that school you are waiting for BS revisit days and ask if they’ll give an extension. Often they will, especially if you are already a student there.

If not, you may have to pay -and risk losing- the deposit to hold a space. Since you’ll have 4 days, you’ll know your options and how serious you are about the day option. It’s not unusual in some markets (where few students consider BS) for day school answers to be required before M10, and that turns the deposit into an insurance premium!

Some schools will also be willing to treat forfeited deposits as charitable donations for tax purposes.

Others here have done this recently and can share experience.

I think each situation is different but with my case they gave us an extension date to decide. I didn’t pay any deposit. So let your parents talk to the school. I was honest with them that we really like the school and we were very honored that our daughter was accepted but we wanted to hear from all other boarding schools that we applied to before we can commit. I was caught off guard and I was not aware of the different dates. They told us they do that because boarding schools are taking up their best candidates and it was true as at the end of all that we chose a boarding school but if that school was a boarding school my daughter would have attended it. It was the best but after the Covid I really wanted her to be more with her peers as she is the only child so we found the best fit for her in those other boarding schools that accepted her too. So let your parents talk to the school if they really want you they will give you time to decide and they will even arrange a day for you to go again to see the school if you want apart from the revisit day.
