NYC Gothamist: Canadian wildfire smoke likely to return to NYC and become 'a new norm,' experts say

Awful, just awful. I was going to check out Duluth, MN, as a potential location for a new home. They have cooler temps and plenty of fresh water, but they get a lot of the Canadian smoke, so crossing that city off the list.

I figured this was the case when it was so severe last year. Why would it get better since forest fires are only going to get worse? My only hope is that we will eventually learn to use frequent controlled burns to reduce fire damage, danger and the health threat of smoke. Unfortunately, there is a lot of legal red tape, bureaucracy and lack of fire experts in Canada according to this article: CANADA-THE IMPACT OF FIRE-EXCLUSION LEGISLATION - International Association of Wildland Fire

Excerpt:

…the use of prescribed fire has decreased over the 25 years in British Columbia due to increased regulation (including problems with agency approval processes and timelines), smoke concerns, fear of escapes, and a lack of qualified and experienced practitioners.

We are 20 minutes from NYC and now have air filters in every bedroom. It was so depressing when the smoke descended last summer (and in October). Like dusk in the middle of the day, and the weird orange color even looks unhealthy.

I ordered one during the last one (also 20 minutes from nyc). I finally gave in and sat on my porch a bit, felt so claustrophobic.
