NYC hotel recommendations????

We’re planning a quick trip to NYC right after Christmas to catch a few shows. Does anyone have recommendations? I understand that it won’t be cheap, but I really don’t want to spend a fortune. I’m looking for something mid-priced and clean. I just don’t want it to be full of bedbugs and prostitutes. Believe me, I’ve stayed in places like that in my student days!

We stayed at Hotel Elysee this summer. It wasn’t cheap but was very well located with a very nice free breakfast. Clean and worth the money. Sort of like a European hotel…small…not super fancy. On East 54th near Madison.

We like the Excelsior because of the location. It is across from the Museum of Natural History and there is a bus and subway line close by. The rooms are small, but have always been clean. I will say, the front desk is usually rude. It is something of a joke in our family. Will they actually make eye contact. I am always chatty with people and my family thinks I drive these people crazy because I am too dense to notice they are not talking to me.

Unfortunately, I think it is pretty pricey this time of year, but I love the convenience.

If you’re going specifically to see shows, and want to have a hotel close by, look at the Edison. It’s an older hotel but clean and with a perfect location at 47th and Broadway. It’s not the Renaissance or Crowne Plaza, probably the nicest two in that area (and my personal favorites :)), but if you want cheap but decent The Edison is a good choice. Great coffee shop, too.

I’d book soon if I were you. That’s the busiest time of year, which will also be the most expensive, for both hotels and show tickets.

If you need a bit more room. The Kimberly is great. You get a living room with sofabed and two beds in the bedroom. Also has a kitchen. The location is great.

Do you have points you can use at one of the chains? We try to stay at Sheratons or Westins wherever we are for the Starwood points. Its a great program.

Check with your friends/business colleagues to see if anyone is a member of one of the multitude of small, private clubs in New York (such as the Yale Club). Many of them have rooms for reasonable prices. Not the Ritz, as the rooms are usually small, but always clean and the price is right.

My D and I stayed at this fantastic hotel in NY. The staff was so great and the location is perfect for shows. I picked this hotel originally because they had such great deals. I was a little scared about what I might find but this place was THE BOMB! Big screen TV, tremendous room, BIG bathroom. We will definitely go there again. I think I had found a deal on sherman’s travel or smarter travel or hotwire deals. I get those emails all the time. I noticed that the link above offers an option for email coupons also.

I’ve lived in NYC my entire life. Whenever our friends and relatives come to town, we book them at the Milburn Hotel. It’s on the upper west side (west 76th street), clean, reasonably priced, very convenient, and you get free breakfast and a kitchenette. Higly recommended.

Wow, Maltmom! That looks fantastic! We love that area and it would be perfect for when DH and I want to go to NYC & DD joins us for a nite. Thank you so much. I will miss the staff at the Excelsior!!

That’s so funny about the Excelsior. This has been our experience as well as everyone else we know who have stayed there. Some one pointed out that this is noted in most hotel review as well. We do the Beacon or Lucerne now, but will look into the Milburn. We also prefer the Upper West to Midtown. It seems easier to go up or downtown rather than across, always seem such a hike to a subway line esp in bad weather. Also, big plus ds is at school just a few stops sway.

we love the Hotel Beacon – 75th/Broadway. Great with kids – one-bedroom suites are reasonable.

We like staying at the Excelsior also. We enjoy the neighborhood. One of our favorite stories is when we stayed there and the bathroom in the room was in use so my husband went down to the lobby to use the bathroom. When he flushed, the toilet started spouting water and rapidly overflowing. He ran out to the front dest to tell them and the lady casually said she would fill out a work order. He said, “you don’t understand, this whole place is going to be under water within a matter of minutes if you don’t get someone in there NOW!” He sheepishly returned to our room and said we better pack our things, we might be asked to leave. If we are still welcome, we would stay there again.

See, this is why they don’t like to make eye contact with us!

That is a great story! I would have loved to have watched what they did when he left the area.

I actually love the Excelsior as well, and have used it for years. I have heard all these horror stories about their front desk staff, but have never experienced anything like that myself. I have also been the happy recipient of unexpected free upgrades at the Excelsior on several occasions, including a trip last month where I was upgraded to a small suite (wish my H had been with me for that little splurge)

Stayed a week last summer at the Comfort Inn Midtown with my daughter – needed inexpensive, safe and walking distance to Radio City and Times Square. It’s on W 46th St and 6th Ave – half a block from Times Square. Comes with the standard budget hotel breakfast (great for those with little spending change) and the location was perfect for us – we were 5 minutes from every theatre we wanted to walk to! Also close to Times Square subway station, which took us anywhere else we wanted to go.

I’m jealous! Can we stow away in your luggage?

I like the downtown area (used to live in Soho many years ago) and had a good stay at the Four Points Sheraton in Chelsea. I used Starwood points so I don’t know what it would cost. But, it is convenient to a couple of subways. Not much of a lobby but great beds. Other than that, nothing to write home about.

We usually stay at the Marriott Marquis or Courtyard Times Square. Although the Marquis can be pricey, I was last there for a conference with my school picking up the tab for all but one of my nights and the rate was fairly reasonable at the time (only $20 or so more than the Courtyard which is nice, but not as convenient). It is one of the most convenient in terms of walking distance to all the Broadway shows.
