NYC Shopping tips - Dorm Set up

My son will be a freshman at Columbia this fall and we live too far to drive so will be flying him there. We won’t be able to pack the normal stuff a kid would bring to supply his dorm room. Any suggestions for discount shopping close by that we can get him outfitted. Biggest concern is getting a fan and a mini fridge.

Try Target.

You can shop online and have it shipped. Or you can go there by subway from Columbia (#1 line from 116th St or 110th St to 225th St stop, one stop past Baker Field) and buy in person. Or you can take a cab it there, which will probably cost ten to twenty bucks each way.

Oh, forgot this too. Maybe not in time for this fall, but a Costco, Best Buy, Target complex (other stores there too perhaps) is opening later this year at 116th St and the East River, a crosstown bus ride from Columbia.

There is also the Home Depot at 58th and Lex –

Does the school rent fridges? You might want to consider that. If you buy it, you will have to either store it or sell it or something when the school year ends. If you rent it…they take it away!!

There’s a BB and B in Manhattan too…they sell fans.

You can easily pick up a fan at KMart on 34th St @ Penn Station also, not certain if they would have refrigerators.

My daugheter will be a freshman at Parsons and I had the same questions. There is another thread that may be of some help to you:
