<p>I second the Kimberly- it’s right near Sak’s- walkable to Rockefeller Center and theater district. We saw Mary Poppins which is an amazing show. Lots of people love Drowsy Chaperone and our hometown girl of Tracy in Hairspray is finishing up this spring…</p>
<p>Musicals:
I loved Legally Blonde – a definite Girl-y show. I didn’t like Mamma Mia too much. Great music, silly story, and it took forever to move the plot forward. I might be in the minority… but I didn’t like Phantom… either the 1st time I saw it 19 years ago, or again this summer with my son & a mother/daughter pair of friends of ours. Only the 19 yo daughter really liked it. Can’t go wrong with A Chorus Line (I’ve seen it 5x, but this was not the best cast). Great music, but the actors seemed to be missing the “hunger”. Of course, Wicked – but good luck trying to gets tix. Same with Jersey Boys – amazing, but impossible to find. Avenue Q is adorable, but might be a little racy to see with your teens… I saw it with my mom, my son saw it with a friend. Haven’t seen Lion King in years… but it was amazing. Never saw Hairspray on Broadway (but the movie was great)… nor have I seen this production of Grease (my sister in law took my young nieces & nephews) … how can you go wrong with Grease??? I’ve never seen Blue Man Group (It’s in the Village) but S1 has seen it 3x, S2 saw it once… both really enjoyed it! Off Broadway, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change… its been running for years… probably more of a ladies’ show than anything else… but a terrific take on M/F relationships set to music. For a classic… Gypsy is in previews. I have tix for next month. I’ve never liked Chicago – saw it 2x over the years, even tho I loved the movie. Those are the musicals… If you like Nathan Lane, and don’t mind enormous amounts of profanity… see November, written by David Mamet. It was hysterical. For anyone who is “into” the Presidential election. I went with S1 over his winter break. Too bad you missed Farnsworth, Drowsy Chaperone & Spelling Bee – they were great… if you can ever catch them on tour, go for it!</p>

<p>nymom2sons, you sound like me & my family/friends. I spend my “extra” money on season tickets to the theater, and when in NY to visit my D we go to at least 2 shows. Saw Avenue Q, loved it from start to finish. Saw Curtains, David Hyde Pierce is a natural for live theater, and the show was great. Already mentioned Legally Blonde (loved it). Saw Jersey Boys several times, loved it each time. Wicked is not to be missed. Drowsy Chaperone is on tour and heading my way, I have tix. Saw Color Purple, good, not excellent. Love Chorus Line & Chicago. Slept through Phantom, and didn’t thoroughly enjoy Les Mis. Loved Spring Awakening (but it’s “adult themed” and not for everyone). Agree about Grease, you can’t go wrong. </p>
<p>There are so many excellent shows right now, any one of them would be worth it. I look forward to hearing where ivoryk ends up.</p>
<p>Almost everything I’ve seen I get discount tix for… either by seeing them in previews, or on Broadwaybox.com, or Playbill.com. They’re usually about 35%off… Really haven’t paid full price for anything in a very long time… that’s a plus to living 1/2 hour away from Broadway, very flexible about when I can go. It’s not like being on vacation, and having a limited time frame. Wicked & Jersey Boys were gifts from a client of my husband’s. I want to take my mom to see Wicked for Mother’s Day, but I can’t get decent seats… at least through the summer, and DH feels funny asking for MORE tix for it! I haven’t seen Curtains, but I heard it was very good… and, for some reason, I’ve never had any desire to see Les Mis. A friend saw Spring Awakening, and didn’t really like it. I listen to Sirius Broadway Channel whenever I’m in the car, and the music hasn’t excited me.</p>
<p>My mom and her boyfriend always stay at the Milford Plaza. It’s right near Broadway and Times Square, and, from what I remember, it’s very nice. Extremely convenient.</p>
<p>As for musicals, I personally loathe Rent, Wicked, and Spring Awakening, and with the exception of one song, Jersey Boys does nothing for me. My mom does not recommend Phantom of the Opera: she says it has no melody. However, I recommend Young Frankenstein (written by Mel Brooks, the same man who produced The Producers, which is also an excellent show). The music is amazing, and the show is hilarious. I can also say from personal experience that Spamalot is awesome (but if you’re adverse to Monty Python’s quirky sense of humor, you may not appreciate it as much). “The Song That Goes Like This” gets me in stitches every time.</p>
<p>I’ve also heard from friends that The Drowsy Chaperone and Mary Poppins are excellent (apparently, Mary Poppins has some unbelievable technical effects). The Drowsy Chaperone, though, is much funnier to people well-acquainted with musical theatre; the same applies to Curtains, which my mom (who has a degree in theatre) really enjoyed.</p>
