NYer's - What are Math A & B equivalent to?

S will be applying to colleges this fall. For those of you in NY, what math classes did you list on your college applications for Math A & B. His math teacher said to mark off Algebra I and II, geometry and trig. He had to take a two year version of Math B because of a fast moving math teacher - half the class dropped out and he couldn’t switch due to a full schedule!! Anyway, even though he has taken math for four years, it really is a three year course. Naturally, his year was the last year Math A&B.

When I did all of my applications I just didn’t check any of the Algebra, Geometry or Trig classes. I just attached a note, or in the box that said “Other Classes” I explained what classes I took. No school seemed to mind, or even question me about it.

The new system is definitely much better when it come to applying to colleges or when students move and go to a different state.

Its pretty safe to mark off that you’ve completed Algebra I (math A) Algebra II (math B), geometry (A+B) and Trig (mostly B), because math A+B is a combination of all of them. I wouldn’t bother to explain what A+B is, although most schools are probably used to them if they usually take a significant amount of NY applicants.

I didn’t have to put it on my applications because I was in Calc by that time and many people will be in pre-Calc, but when it shows up on the transcript as AB-1 or whatever, colleges know what it is. There are a lot of students from New York applying to a lot of schools. There should be no confusion.
That being said, I took math before the switch and my brother and sister took it the year after:
When I took Math AB-1 My sister and brother took Algebra 1
AB-2=Geometry
AB-3=Trig/Algebra 2

You don’t learn the same things each year, but by the end you have covered almost all the same topics.
