NYT Article: On Frozen Pond: Playing Up a Hockey Legacy

<p>The January 26 edition of The New York Times features an article on pond hockey in Concord, N.H., which includes multiple references to St. Paul’s – the birthplace of the American version of the sport – and hockey legend Hobey Baker (Form of 1909).</p>

<p>Rector Bill Matthews ’61 was interviewed for the piece, which comes two days ahead of the inaugural 1883 Black Ice Pond Hockey Tournament. The tournament – of which St. Paul’s School is a co-sponsor – is scheduled for January 28-30 on Concord’s White Park pond. The tournament’s name pays homage to the nickname given to the dark, unforgiving surface of the bitterest of New Hampshire winters as well as to the year of American hockey’s debut in Millville. The tournament will feature 50 teams in men’s and women’s divisions, competing in four-on-four games on six rinks, each 120 x 64 in size.</p>
